Judge Roy Bean are named after the so called "Hangin' Judge", an eccentric Texas saloon-keeper and Justice of the Peace who called himself "The law, west of the Pecos". According to legend, Judge Roy Bean held court in his saloon along the Rio Grande River in a desolate stretch of the Chihuahuan Desert of west Texas. Judge Roy Bean, the band, came into existence in early 2007. Drawing from diverse influences (Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Stooges, Nirvana, Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, Who, Queen, Velvets, Doors, Dead, Foo Fighters, Weezer, and many others ) the five-piece band is a amalgam of three singer-songwriters who met while teachers at a Brooklyn public high school; guitarist, Mark Stratil, drummer, Mike Wertz and the jazz composition-trained bassist, Andrew Battles. Completing the lineup are multi instrumentalists Jon Shaw and Chris Aston. The result is an incendiary rock band that relishes putting on a great show and energizing an audience, with legendary Halloween gigs.
After tragically losing their incredible bandmate and brother Grant Mulligan in December 2008, the band took some time to reflect and regroup. Now working with the incredibly talented Jon Shaw (Beast's of Eden, Broken West) the boys have begun picking up the pieces and are hard at work on their sophomore album.
I really appreciate your friendship and ALL your awesome support! We've been very fortunate to have just passed 37,450 MySpace friends, over 430,500 page views, over 385,000 song plays and growing so I'd be ever so grateful if you could bulletin your friends and ask them to add us too. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!!!
Grant will be missed- he was a funny guy. Some of my favorite memories playing music were in that 9-piece band in HS with he and Pig. I know I've got those Fatbelly tapes somewhere...
A Tribute to Grant. He will be missed. I knew him from church and families socializing. He was a great kid and teenager. Full of energy. Sorry we didn't keep in touch. Prayers for his family and friends.
