Interests

  • General

Generally speaking, I'm a bit of a Renaissance man with affectations for everything from medieval-to-Victorian costuming, clockpunk and steampunk aesthetics, and how I can possibly make myself even more foppish to genuine scholarly interests in history, early music, religion/theology/liturgy, and a mild dose of political activism. More often than not, that means ranting about people from the safety of my own keyboard, but I'm slowly moving away from that nonsense.

I'm gradually returning back to serious life endeavors, such as with the men's touring Gregorian chant choir that I'm a part of, and other things.
  • Music

Early music (Gregorian chant, organum, fauxbourdon)

Renaissance (Ockegheim, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Palestrina)

[Tallis as characterized in the series "The Tudors"]

Baroque and Classical (J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Ignacio de Jerusalem)

Modern metal/symbphonic metal (Nightwish, Within Temptation, Thy Majestie, Blind Guardian)

[My on-again, off-again girlfriend, Tarja Turunen]
  • Movies

Mostly historical epics ("Gladiator", "Braveheart", "The Patriot", "Apocalypto", "The Last Samurai")

swashbucklers ("The Count of Monte Cristo", "The Three Musketeers", "The Man in the Iron Mask", the first "Pirates of the Caribbean")

Movies based on English plays (Branagh's Shakespeare films such as "Henry V", "Hamlet", and "Much Ado About Nothing", the Wilde plays "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "An Ideal Husband", Robert Bolt's "A Man for All Seasons", and Jean Anoulih's "Becket")

Also am a fan of most Christopher Nolan films, especially "The Prestige", "Batman Begins", and "The Dark Knight"
  • Television

Don't watch much TV, but I've been getting into the series "Kings" recently.

Also enjoyed "Firefly" and the anime series "Death Note", "Trigun", and "Gundam Wing". When I was a kid, I really liked "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Gargoyles". Who didn't?
  • Books

The Bible, Dante's "Divine Comedy", Milton's "Paradise Lost", anything by G.K. Chesterton.... perhaps also Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" nowadays, and I'm looking into "The Song of Roland".

I do consume a historical romance novel once in a while, just because. Yes, bodice-rippers.
  • Heroes

    Mel Gibson. 'Nuff said.

About me:

Profile v. 3.0

Apparently, girls don't like to read, so I'm making this one somewhat shorter than the ones before. -_^

About me:

My name is James. And what's in a name? Well, mine means "holds the heel". It comes from the Biblical Jacob, who was born with his twin brother Esau by holding onto his heel. I don't have a foot fetish like the name implies, but if you interest me, I'll hold onto your heels too. Interpret that however you want.

I'm one of a handful of college students who aren't interested in drinking, partying, and wild orgies. I don't live in the library, either; but I prefer girls I can hold an academic conversation with once in a while.

My interests:

I like watching good movies. To name a few that I think are "great": Gladiator, Batman Begins, The Last Samurai, Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, A Man for All Seasons, and the Star Wars series. Did you notice that the first three all had scores composed by Hans Zimmer? If you did, you can message me.

I like classical music, especially Bach and Mozart. I also like some metal bands, like Nightwish and Within Temptation. I sing in a men's choir for Gregorian chant. I want to start a band, so if you can play an instrument (any instrument, doesn't have to be a guitar or keyboards), you can message me.

My other interests are generally related to my creative mind. Yes, I know everyone and their uncle says they're "creative", but I mean it. For example, I like designing and wearing clothes that are reminiscent of Victorian fashion. Among my other projects are a science fiction trilogy, and a film-noir comic book made up of still photos.

Dark secrets:

Everyone likes dark secrets, right? Mine are that I listen to Evanescence and read smutty historical romance novels. I might even do both at the same time. It's better than porn.

If I strike your fancy:

Send a message, silly! The only thing I get on Myspace tends to be "hey, what's up?" from people I haven't seen in years, or friend invites from fake-looking porn accounts. So, there's a good chance I'll read and appreciate your message. ....

Who I'd like to meet:

If you made it this far, it's probably safe to talk to me. But if you insist on some preferences...

-I like smart girls. It helps if you're in college or graduated. If you're in grad school or already have a J.D., I probably think you're hot.

-Brunettes are sexier than blondes.

-I don't discriminate on weight, but keep in mind that I'm under 125 lbs., and I don't want to be crushed.

-It might help if you're an artsy-farty type.

-Finally, if all else fails, a big rack can forgive a lot of sins. Honesty is the best policy, right? You say PIG, I say Politically Incorrect Gentleman.
