Julane plays fiddle in a range of styles. She is best known for playing Norwegian and Norwegian-American music. She has been influenced by many great fiddlers, including her grandfather, Gehart Lund. A few others of the many who have influenced her are: Stanley Nosal (a violinist from Kenosha, Wisconsin), Harold Sorenson (A Norwegian-American fiddler from northern Minnesota), Beth Hoven Rotto (lead fiddler of the band Foot-notes, of Decorah Iowa), Jens Nyplass (a fiddler from Røros, Norway), and Ånon Egeland (a master fiddler she studied with for years in Norway). Her style on the Hardanger fiddle is greatly influenced by Vidar Lande (a Norwegian master fiddler who Julane studied intensively with for several years), and Tarje Kristian Hansen (of Telemark, Norway).

Julane's music ranges in scope. She has played in various styles but her solo work has been in Scandinavian fiddling, with a focus on her eight stringed Norwegian Hardanger fiddle as well as the conventional violin. Melodies that she plays range from haunting and mystical to lively dance tunes. Music from Julane's latest CD, Looking Back, is similar to the lilting waltzes, polkas, and schottisches that have been played by the Minnesota Scandinavian Ensemble, and Foot-notes, a Scandinavian-American band from Iowa.
Julane Lund has performed in Eastern and Western Europe, Canada, and the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan. Besides the conventional violin she also plays the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle (which is highly ornamented and has 4-5 extra strings) and she sings in Norwegian and in English. She has a master’s degree in Norwegian traditional fiddling from Telemark University College, in Norway, as well as additional music degrees from T.U.C. in Norway, and Ball State University, in Indiana. Before her formal schooling Julane learned about fiddling from her Norwegian grandfather, Gehart Lund, as well as from other respected Norwegian and American fiddlers. Besides her solo work Julane has performed with notable ensembles. In Norway she was a member of the Norwegian folk band, Totak, in Russia she performed with the Bashkirian Folk Instrument Philharmonic, and in Quebec she joined with the Quebecois folk band, Cordaphone. In the U.S. she has played in the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis as well as performing in ensembles consisting of members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 Julane won the Traditional Arts Indiana State Fiddling Contest at the Indiana State Fair, and she has since judged the contest. In 2008 she played in a rock band and performed with the Celtic ensemble, Alair, along with teaching music appreciation for Indiana State University. She is currently planning a tour of the U.S. for July of 2009 with Goril Ramo Haave, an award winning langeleik (Norwegian dulcimer) player, guitarist, and singer from Norway. Keep checking to see where they will be performing! Julane is on Facebook and Twitter. Join her at www.facebook.com/julane.lund and www.twitter.com/julanelund
