MY LAZY BUTTERFLY LIFE
Born in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula, in the frontier town of Badajoz on the border with Portugal, in the spring of 1969. More than 20 years dedicated body and soul to music with a diversity of styles and phases born from punk, R’n’R and the Indie scene of the 90s. One of his best-known groups was The Animal Crackers (on the Jammin’ Music record label), playing their own brand of wild, licentious rock with the clear influences of Sonic Youth and Joy Division. They were a clear reference point of alternative music at the height of the Independent music scene in Spain, recording two albums; “Work My Body” (1992) and “Sounds Like a Hit” (1995).
They reached the top positions of the most important charts, remaining there for several weeks at a time but unfortunately, the group disintegrated after releasing their second LP. A new stage began, with a new group - Big Black Mariah. They attracted the attention of Everlasting Records/Recordings from the Other Side, releasing the “Buick E.P.” (1998) and an album “Lovesmoke” (2001), both produced by Javier Almendral. During this period, they also played support to groups like Luna, Six By Seven, Sexy Sadie… Big Black Mariah lived out the decadence of the Indie explosion and Julian began a solo career under the moniker of Julian Elsie.
Julian tells us simply “I think at last I’ve found the path that I didn’t really know I was looking for, but I feel good making the music I make. I never think about if others will like it or not, I don’t force catchy choruses, I just let the music flow from the moment it appears in my head without being guided by external influences. (There’s not much out there that really interests me, though I have a lot of respect for Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, Mr Reed, Mr Cale, L. Cohen, the blues of Lightnin' Hopkins, J.L.Hooker and Big Joe Turner, Nick Cave, Tom Waits etc, etc, ). In short, I think I play to try to feel a bit of happiness”.

Esto no es una hoja promocional, sino un prólogo al disco. Por eso, al igual que los prólogos de los libros, no es necesario leer este texto antes de enfrentarse a este álbum de Julian Elsie, ni siquiera es necesario leerlo nunca, pues al fin y al cabo solo es una impresión personal. Escribo esto porque admiro a Julian Elsie como músico, y los dos objetivos que ahora me propongo son, por un lado expresar esa admiración, y por otro realizar una especie de croquis explicativo de lo que escucho al enfrentarme a "Dig a grave with bare hands".
No recuerdo quien dijo que, en el arte, más importante todavía que la originalidad, el estilo e incluso tener algo que decir, es poseer “point of view”, un “punto de vista” que asocie inmediatamente a la obra con su creador. Eso, en definitiva, es lo que convierte en especial el trabajo de un autor o un intérprete. Julian Elsie posee “punto de vista”.
A la hora de buscar referencias, si tuviera que explicar a qué suena "Dig a grave with bare hands" , diría que la voz y el fraseo me recuerdan tanto a Lou Reed y como a Jacques Brel, que estas canciones beben de Leonard Cohen, de Burt Bacharach, del spaghetti western y del Alt-Country más desértico , y para explicar los arreglos -con la guitarra acústica y el slide siempre presentes, esa sobria base rítmica, y esas pinceladas de piano, banjo y lap steel- hablaría de sonidos americanos bien asimilados, de unos 16 Horsepower más pausados, o de unos Giant Sand afrancesados, hablaría de Neil Young, Tom Waits o del último Cash.
Julian Elsie suena a todo esto, pero es original a su manera, le sobra estilo y posee un discurso lírico elegante, sincero y sólido (no en vano reconoce que escribe la letra antes de componer la música de sus canciones). De todas formas, y volviendo sobre mis pasos, lo que realmente me llama la atención por encima de sus influencias, su sonido, su voz o sus letras, es que Julian pertenece a esa rara especie de artistas que tienen una personalidad tan marcada que terminan recordando sobre todo a sí mismos. Julian Elsie posee “punto de vista”.
Ahora que ya has leído esto, por favor, escucha el disco más de dos veces, escúchalo con respeto y atención. Si después de hacerlo no estás de acuerdo con mis palabras, no importa: todo el mundo puede equivocarse.
