A beloved fixture in the Washington, D.C. music scene for twenty years, Julia Nixon is a neo-soul powerhouse. The recipient of the 2007 Helen Hayes Award, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical, Nixon catapulted onto the national stage as the lead in the original production of "Dreamgirls" on Broadway, replacing Jennifer Holiday.
Julia's musical versatility and emotional depth spans more than two decades. Following her success in "Dreamgirls" on Broadway she gained local fame with "Julia & Company" in the 1980's and 90's and was the resident group at the popular DC nightclub Mr. Henry's.
Her tremendous vocal power has inspired comparisons with such artists as Aretha Franklin, Oleta Adams and Tina Turner. Julia also has performed in "Smokey Joe's Café" (touring company), and, in August, 2006, finished a triumphant and moving performance as the lead in Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori's Caroline, or Change at Studio Theatre in Washington D.C. winning her the Helen Hayes Award. Nixon's other credits include performances on Broadway, at Radio City Music Hall, the White House, Lincoln and Kennedy Centers, international radio, television, and personal appearances, spanning Tokyo, New York, London, and South America; performance associations with Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Kenny G., Bruce Willis, and Richard Pryor. Her first CD, Onward & Upward is a great showcase of her artistry and range. Julia's new CD "Julia" will be released by Double Dawg Records this fall.
