  • Bio

Julian Charles Piper's an anomaly. Although born in rural Devon, teenage years were spent listening in awe to the raw sounds of Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters, wrestling first with cigar boxes and later plywood guitars to try and imitate the sounds that filtered through the vinyl. And always there, the Technicolor 'Sixties vision of Chuck Berry; shark finned Cadillacs and a land where hamburgers really did 'sizzle on an open grill night and day,' - the U.S.A. By the time he finally made it over to see if it was true, relocating to Baton Rouge Louisiana in 1987, he was already a road dog with more tall tales than any one person should perhaps know – the result of anarchic adventures touring and playing guitar behind Chicago veterans like Carey and Lurrie Bell, Lefty Dizz, and John Lee Hooker's sideman Eddie Kirkland. In Baton Rouge five nights a week were spent playing in every Juke Joint in town, along the way becoming a life long buddy of Rockin' Tabby Thomas – then owner of the legendary Blues Box – backing up revered Blues legends from the Excello label like Silas Hogan and Clarence Edwards, and on days off playing the New Orleans circuit with harpmeister J. D. Monque'd. Two W.C. Handy Awards followed for his guitar playing on 'Straight Shoot' – an album he produced for Carey Bell – and 'Lester Rides Again' with Lazy Lester, along with radio shows for national BBC radio and three European tours with Tabby Thomas. Subsequent projects over the years have included producing an album for '60's Rock legend Dave Berry, three releases with Junkyard Angels, a solo recording 'Blue Guitar', 'Can I Play With Your Poodle' with his organ based trio Jelly Roll. He's also shared stages with B.B.KING, ROBERT CRAY, THE DRIVE BY TRUCKERS, THE MUDDY WATERS BLUES BAND, NEIL YOUNG, HUBERT SUMLIN, and MOJO magazine recently called his slide playing 'dazzling'. The man's also recently broadcast 'live' on the KING BISCUIT RADIO SHOW from Helena Arkansas, appeared at the 2009 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, jammed with Cassandra Wilson, and appeared at Morgan Freeman's Club Ground Zero in Clarksdale Mississippi. Now his latest album 'Terlingua' sees him returning to his early acoustic roots, a bare stripped down clutch of originals like 'Who Got The Olds ?' – the sad tale of Johnny Ace who shot himself playing Russian Roulette – the haunting beauty of the slide guitar instrumental title track recorded with his old buddy Phil Beer of Show Of Hands fame, and some dusty Blues songs from Skip James, The Mississippi Sheiks and The Grey Ghost.

Guitarist JULIAN PIPER has the rare distinction of having played guitar on two Memphis W.C.HANDY AWARD winning albums - STRAIGHT SHOOT with the late CAREY BELL on BSW records - an album he also produced for Carey, and LAZY LESTER's 1988 'Lester Rides Again' album on the legendary BLUE HORIZON label produced by MIKE VERNON , best known for his work with ERIC CLAPTON and FLEETWOOD MAC.
