Fiddler Julie Metcalf began as a classical violinist in Worcester, MA. Coming from a family of musicians, she was encouraged to make music from an early age; she particularly enjoyed experimenting with instruments brought home by her father, an instrumental music and strings teacher. Julie picked up the violin for the first time when she was 4 years old and has been playing ever since.
When she was 12, Julie discovered fiddle music through PBS and country radio, and began learning Celtic tunes on her own. She heard jazz violin for the first time on a televised performance of the Boston Pops with Regina Carter. Julie has studied all styles of string music at summer programs including Mark O'Connor's Fiddle Camp and Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music.
Julie was a student of Lucia Lin at Boston University's College of Fine Arts, where she studied classical violin as a Performance major. Recently, Julie has immersed herself in the study of folk music and contemporary styles including Latin music and jazz. Julie is now pursuing a degree in Violin Performance at Berklee College of Music, where she is a scholarship student.
A versatile player, Julie has played in orchestras across Massachusetts, including the New England Philharmonic and Symphony Pro Musica, and has appeared as a guest with a variety of artists and bands, including Walter and Valerie Crockett and the Oxymorons and The Young Republic. As a freelance violinist in Boston, Julie has performed as a violinist for Speakeasy Stage, Reagle Players, and Vokes Players.
Julie is a member of the Folk Arts Quartet with Ivonne Hernandez, Nicki Singleton, and Liz Davis Maxfield.
