Julie began writing songs with her sister when she was around 4 years old. The first song they cowrote went like this: I have a dress/Oh yes, oh yes/It has spots on it/I would not throw it in a pit. Artistic differences arose when Julie wanted to edit that last line to say "I wear it with a bonnet" but Patti disagreed. Julie stomped off, shouting, "I can't work with this! I'll be in my trailer!"
Julie's music has been described as "folk-pop that is rootsy, yet modern; a mix of genres that includes blues, jazz and country."
