Julio Mena started his initial singing experience in the Urban Dance sub-genre of Freestyle. As a member of a group along with older brother Angel and child hood friend Fred-Nice, the trio achieved maximum success in that field of music. The group was called Vocal Image, which was signed to the national label Arstistik/Mic Mac with worldwide distribution and promotion. Vocal Image went on to record and release multiple singles as a group and as individuals as each were able to cut solo singles with varying success. Vocal Image was nominated for the New England Freestyle Awards that brought all the top musicians in this genre from all over the Northeast in a celebration and award ceremony for this music. Vocal Image won best group overwhelmingly, while brother Angel won song of the year. It was Julio Mena, however, that earned up and coming artist of the year and easily the most promising vocalist freestyle had in quite a while.
While Freestyle music has its limitations and minimal success, Julio did not. A group called Façade approached him because of his incredible vocal ability, harmoninzing ability, and arrangement mentality. He was asked to become a lead singer for this group that was quickly rising in popularity during the height of MTV’s TRL show. It was during one of those summer battles of the bands competition that the world got to see their first glimpse of Façade and that of Julio Mena. Comfortable on stage and on national television, Julio was able to memorize fans from all over the world with his tantalizing vocals. Although the group Façade did not make it to the finals of the competition, noticed had been served that Julio Mena was here to stay.
Over the last decade, Julio Mena has been writing, producing, arranging, and recording his own music. He being the dictator of his own direction has taken creativity to a whole new level. No longer is he tied down to the politics of an artistic director or an overzealous manager. He is his own man and we are all better for it. The freedom he enjoys to employ new techniques and sounds have gained him popularity and recognition in the World Wide Web. His myspace page is one of the most hit pages in the music portion of myspace. Recently, Julio Mena was featured on DJ Kev G’s mix compilation with his smash hit, “She’s Hott!”
