BIO
Julio Herrlein, também conhecido como “Chumbinho” atua no país profissionalmente há cerca de 20 anos como guitarrista, compositor e arranjador.
Consagrou-se como referência na música instrumental pela sua musicalidade, além da articulação e técnica impecáveis. Suas composições e interpretações são dotadas de identidade própria, misturando o estilo de guitarra solo de jazz (sem acompanhamento) e usando ritmos brasileiros (como o samba e a bossa nova) além de ritmos típicos do RS e Argentina (chacarera, etc.).
JULIO HERRLEIN - EDUCADOR
Julio também atua na área didática trabalhando regularmente como professor particular de música, sendo procurado por músicos profissionais dos mais diversos segmentos musicais que querem aperfeiçoar sua música. Alguns de seus artigos foram incluídos no livro e CD ROM “The Art of Improvisation”, do trompetista americano Bob Taylor.
LIVRO DIDÁTICO
Atualmente prepara um livro sobre harmonia e improvisação financiado pela Prefeitura de Porto Alegre (Fumproarte). A obra será escrita em português e inglês, pois já despertou o interesse de educadores musicais nos EUA e Holanda em adotá-la como ferramenta de ensino.
O trabalho de Herrlein sempre recebe destaque na imprensa local, em programas de TV, rádio e entrevistas e reportagens em jornais e revistas especializadas do país. Recentemente, a participação de Julio Herrlein no DVD de Gustavo Assis-Brasil foi bastante elogiada por Bill Milkowski, um dos principais críticos de jazz dos EUA.
Em 1996, lançou seu primeiro CD “Julio Herrlein – Quarteto” e, em 2000, gravou ao vivo no Theatro São Pedro, (Porto Alegre) seu segundo CD “Julio Herrlein – Trio”. Ambos trabalhos são instrumentais com composições e arranjos de Herrlein.
Sua composição “Novembro”, do CD (“Julio Herrlein – Quarteto”) foi a
vencedora do I Festival de Música Instrumental do RS.
Em 2006, Julio conquistou, no Rio de Janeiro, o primeiro lugar no VIII
concurso Nacional de Composição IBEU (Instituto Brasil-Estados Unidos),
com sua composição “Suíte Maestros Brasileiros”, composta e arranjada
por Julio para a formação de Banda de Sopros (Big Band). A peça
homenageia três expoentes da cultura brasileira: Moacir Santos, Hermeto
Pascoal e o Maestro Cipó. Entre os jurados estavam: Carlos Malta
(saxofonista, arranjador) João Guilherme Ripper (Membro da Academia
Brasileira de Música e curador da sala Cecília Meirelles) e Leonardo
Bruno (compositor, filho de Abel Ferreira).
Na área da música para publicidade, compôs, arranjou e produziu cerca de 1300 peças musicais, muitas delas premiadas.
Por ser uma referência em guitarra no sul do país, já tocou com vários artistas nacionais e internacionais como: Joris Teepe (Holanda), Thiago do Espírito Santo, Sandro Haick,Kiko Freitas, Edu Martins, Lucinha Lins, Robertinho Silva, Phil deGreg (EUA), Alegre Corrêa, Maggie Green (EUA), Craig Owens (EUA), Pata Masters (Alemanha), Michel Dorfman, entre outros.
GUITARRA SOLO JAZZ
Há cerca de três anos, Julio tem apresentado seu espetáculo solo de guitarra, sempre com grande sucesso, em diversos teatros, tendo participado (em 2007) de uma Turnê pelo Projeto Arte Sesc, que percorreu diversas cidades (veja clipagem anexa).

Julio Herrlein, aka, “Chumbinho” is a professional musician for more than 15
years working as guitarist, educator, composer, arranger and have repute for his
musicianship, technique and articulation.
His compositions and interpretations are gifted of their own identity, with
advanced rhythmic purposes, mixing tradicional Solo Jazz Guitar ala Joe Pass with
bossa nova, samba, south american folk music and contemporary jazz influences. In the educational area, Herrlein have some of his articles included on the CDROM “The Art Of Improvisation”, from the american jazz musician Bob Taylor (www.visual-jazz.com).
EDUCATIONAL WORK
Now he is currently working on his own educational book fully granted by Porto Alegre City Town Hall. This book will bring some advanced concepts in harmony and improvisation for guitar and other instruments. The book will be in portuguese and english because it brought interest to music educators inside and outside Brazil as a teaching tool. The music work by Julio Herrlein always have a spotlight in the media (TV shows, radio interviews, newspapers and national music magazines) as you can see in the clipping. Recently, Julio received very good critics by Bill Milkowski (one of the most important jazz critics of USA) about his playing in the DVD “Gustavo Assis-Brasil in Concert” (Boston based guitarist). He has already been mentioned as a discovery in specialized magazines as Guitar Player, Cover Batera e Cover Guitarra.

JULIO HERRLEIN IS THE WINNER OF THE OF THE IBEU ( BRAZIL – UNITED STATES INSTITUTE) NATIONAL CONTEST OF COMPOSITION FOR BIG BAND.

Julio Herrlein was first prize winner of IBEU ( Brazil – United States Institute) Composition Contest (2006, Big Band Edition). The winner composition, the “Brazilian Maestros Suite” was composed, arranged and edited by Julio in only ten days for Big Band (5 Saxes, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones) specially for the contest. The Suite have 3 movements: the first, a samba dedicated to Maestro Cipó; the second, a bossa-nova dedicated to the great Maestro Moacir Santos. The third movement was an “afoxé” dedicated to Hermeto Pascoal, the “Wizard”.
The judges was composed of persons of national repute: Carlos Malta, famous saxophonist, composer and arranger that worked many years with Hermeto Pascoal; João Guilherme Ripper, member of the Brazilian Academy of Music, Leonardo Bruno, composer, arranger that studied with Olivier Messiaen.
His composition Novembro has won the first prize on the Primeiro Festival de Música Instrumental do RS. He has already played with the dutch bass player Joris Teepe, with the american singer Maggie Green, with Lucinha Lins, Robertinho Silva, Alegre Corrêa, Craig Owens (USA), Pata Masters (Germany), among others. He has produced more than 1000 jobs in the field of advertising as a composer and musical arranger.
SOLO JAZZ GUITAR
Since 2005, Julio Herrlein is working as a “Solo Jazz Guitar” artist, always
with success. The show was presented in many theatres and jazz clubs. In 2007, the show toured more than 2000 miles in 8 days, 8 different cities in “Projeto Arte Sesc”.
Playing the style Solo Jazz Guitar is an art very special that was being developed by the time and with the necessity to find an own expression. Several guitar players have used this solo format in their expression. Names like Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Hélio Delmiro e Martin Taylor are references for the new generation of jazz guitar players.
During his solo recital, Julio Herrlein presents a soundness that almost reaches the pure sound, acoustic, without the use of effects usually related to the guitar (distortion), producing a traditional jazz sound, but with technical innovations.
