Theatre. it is my career and my life... also art, in all its forms - literature, music, film, photography, design, etc. etc. I also like fun, silly stuff like karaoke (a fairly new interest for me), drag shows (i was even onstage once and could be convinced to perform again), dancing my puerto-rican ass off, riding my bike along the lakefront (not quite the ocean but a nice substitute), and inspiring conversation with new and old friends...
Music
these lists are so hard... i tend to become attached to musicians who are powerful performers and good lyricists - if a song touches me it's usually because of meaningful lyrics or a powerful voice, or both. a short list: melissa etheridge, guster, julie loyd, tracy chapman, heather nova, dave matthews, sarah mclachlan, barenaked ladies, indigo girls, pink, alanis morrissette, tori amos, better than ezra, tom petty, lisa loeb, billy joel, simon and garfunkel... and i'm always adding to my collection, and interested in new music that's really really good... plus, i'm a thespian, and so i love good musicals - usually the ones that make me cry are the best: rent, once on this island, jcs, assassins, into the woods, working, ragtime (to name a few)
Movies
RENT!!! (ok, i love the musical, AND the film)... i like documentaries and independent films... i'm a sucker for movies that are well written and/or well acted, not necessarily the mainstream blockbusters that everyone says are good just because they make a lot of money... and i have to be in the right mood to enjoy the frat guy/fart joke silly movies, otherwise i just think they're stupid, and in any case, they aren't ever what i'd call "good" movies, maybe just "stupid-funny," though every once in a while i'm totally in the mood for stupid-funny...
Television
thinking about how to answer this makes me realize i watch WAY too much tv... i adore the history channel, the discovery channels - including tlc, national geographic channel, and a&e: those stations have the most interesting programs that can keep me hooked for hours... shows i love: my so-called life!, buffy, the 'L' word, the simpsons, futurama, family guy (adult swim in general, really), mythbusters (did i mention i'm a bit of a dork?), law & order (regular and svu), star trek tng (dork, dork, dork, i know), project runway, and project greenlight - this show reinforces all of my artistic ambitions in a strange, but exciting way...
You're cute! And, when you're not, it's not pretty. Sure, you like girly stuff,
like pink frilly outfits, flowers, adorable baby animals, tiny boxes that you can't fit
anything in, and tiny doll-sized clothing, but you're also quite the firebrand! People
who scorn you, and just plain stupid people who get in your way, often pay dearly. You
are nearly as likely to jump up and kiss someone as to drop an anvil on someone's head! You
are not the sort to be trifled with. You are, after all, Princess Angelina Contessa Louisa
Francesca Banana Fana Bo Besca, the Third.
Books
there are many, many books i love, but right now i am recalling my love for the late spalding gray, the great actor/writer/artist/emerson grad who wrote such great books as "sex and death to the age fourteen," "swimming to cambodia," and "monster in a box," and also made films of some of these grand monologue performances... here is one of the best moments from the latter novel/film mentioned:
"Often, when you do a long run of a play, in this case Our Town, you have what I like to call a unifying accident, in which something so strange happens in the play, that it suddenly unites the audience in the realization that we are all here together at this one moment in time. It's not television. It's not the movies. And it probably will never be repeated ever again. It happened as I was speaking of the dead and I say, "And they stay here while the earth part of them burns away, burns out....They're waitin' for something they feel is comin'. Something important and great...." As I say this, I turn and gesture to them, waiting, and, just as I turn and gesture, the little eleven-year-old boy playing Wally Webb projectile vomits! Like a hydrant it comes, hitting some of the dead on their shoulders! The other dead levitate out of their chairs, in total shock, around him and drop back down. Franny Conroy, deep in her meditative trance, is slowly wondering, "Why is it raining on stage?" The little boy flees from his chair, vomit pouring from his mouth. Splatter. Splatter. Splatter, I'm standing there. My knees are shaking. The chair is empty. The audience is thunderstruck! There is not a sound coming from them, except for one little ten-year-old boy in the eighth row. He knows what he saw and he is LAUGHING!
At this point, I don't know whether to be loyal to Thornton Wilder and go on with the next line as written, or attempt what might be one of the most creative improvs in the history of American theatre. At last I decide to be loyal to Wilder and simply go on with the next line, and I turn to the empty chair and say: "Aren't they waitin' for the eternal part of them to come out clear?""
a loyal, lonely soul; a passionate, opinionated, and confident self-proclaimed artist; an open book with a big heart; an ambitious, career-driven dreamer; a true, lifelong friend, always lending a shoulder to cry on; a lover and a fighter; a true believer in the goodness of others, even when they fail me... a newcomer to chicago, though after 5(!) years i now happily call it home, a proud boston native (though, no, i do not have an accent), a lesbian (that means: men, unless i know you, don't even try), and an Equity stage manager.
"i can't control my destiny
i trust my soul
my only goal is just - to be
there's only now
there's only here
give in to love
or live in fear
no other path
no other way
no day but today"
"how do you measure a year in the life?
how about love?
remember the love
measure in love..." - jonathan larson "RENT"
You scored as Mimi. You're Mimi! You're not much for rational thought, it seems, and you follow your heart more than your mind. You enjoy danger, and you can probably dance really well. You're older than you seem, and you probably put it all on the line for love. Take it easy on the wildness, but have fun with life!
Who I'd like to meet: people who love what i love... theatre people; artsy, creative, intelligent people; open-minded people; ambitious people; dreamers, lovers, thinkers, passionate people; emotionally available, honest, outspoken people, and those who are proud of it; people who can appreciate who i am because they are like me too... those who truly value friendship, who know the importance of respect and honesty, and who are not afraid to speak their minds...
i like to be inspired, to live life looking for the inspiration in everything; in work, in friends, in art, in love, and in myself... if there's nothing to be inspired by or feel passionate about, what's the point? if you are inspiring, or want to be inspired, i want to meet you...
RENTheads... i want to meet more RENTheads, especially if they're cute dykes like me... ;)
anyone who's a little brian krakow, a little rickie vasquez, wants to be just like rayanne graff, and is in love with angela chase...
I dreamed the weirdest dream of you a couple of nights ago. :)
You had a baby and one of your male friends was the dad, but there was nothing going on between the two of you and I was wondering about Cindy and suddenly Britney Spears appeared. :)
See. Always on my mind. Even at night. I love you and miss you.
Yay! We love Julia and the fact that she's born! We miss you! HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY from the bottom of our MOODY hearts! Jay, Erin, Heidi, Eric, Brian & Mark
