About me:
ARTS UP JUNEAU! Check out our weekly podcast of happenings around town

Community Arts Calendar: Check out what's happening in the local arts scene

The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, incorporated in 1973, is the formal arts agency for Juneau, Alaska. Our mission is to provide cultural opportunities to the community of Juneau and to serve as the umbrella arts organization for the capital city of Alaska. We strive to reflect the diversity of needs and desires of Juneau through our programs and offerings.

Our gallery, located on North Franklin Street, is a well-known contemporary art gallery in downtown Juneau. Visit us the first Friday of each month between 4:30 – 7 pm for Gallery Walk. Food and drink, visit with friends, and most importantly, check out the fabulous art of local artists! We’ll also let you know about other participating galleries on the gallery walk stops. For information about applying to exhibit, visit our website at: www.jahc.org

We host two free arts in education programs at Cedar Park and Geneva Woods Housing complexes with the help of local artist extraordinaire Jim Fowler. (Check out Jim’s photos of the kids with their art on our pics page.) We’ve also designed a special student outreach series. These lecture demonstrations, concerts and workshops take place during the school day on-site in any number of different schools. Most recently, Lunasa, the Irish acoustic group that visited for St. Patrick’s Day, held a special in-school performance for the students.

Every year, we award scholarships and grants to Juneau students, adult artists and local arts organizations with the help and support of many generous sponsors. Thank you! For an application and review dates, check out our website at www.jahc.org

And of course, there is Wearable Art, our biggest fundraiser of the year! The 7th annual Wearable Art Extravaganza “Solstice to Solstice” was a huge success in February 2007! Through silent auction donations and with the help of hundreds of volunteers, wonderful models and talented artists, we raised over $10,000 toward our grants and scholarships. Check out the photos at: www.seannaosullivan.com. Everyone's ideas for the 2008 Wearable Art Extravaganza should be in the works to the theme of “Mechanical Marvels.”

After those long Alaskan winters, we celebrate our local talent outdoors during the summer months with our free Concerts in the Park series. These Friday evening performances are held at Marine Park on the waterfront and feature local musicians, storytellers, dancers, and magicians as well as visiting performers. This continues to be a favorite venue for a wide diversity of performers year after year.

Our 2007-08 concert series season line-up will include the Bearfoot Bluegrass band, Bam, Huun Huur Tu, the Sitka-Juneau-Dallas Brass Quintet, the Moscow Circus, Carlotta Santana, and Ball in the House.

We also host events like monthly Arts Roundtable meetings, Poetry Omnibus, the Cabin Fever Arts Festival … and more!
