Junk Riot is a four-piece garage/indie/experimental band from Tallinn, Estonia. Their sound is built on high-pitched vocals and heavy usage of pitch-shifting/delay effects on guitar. Band’s line-up contains singer-guitarist Vadim Vadim Ivanov, lead guitarist Viktor Pavlov, bassist Julian Zainullin and drummer Kirill Nikiforov.
Formed in 2006, Junk Riot’s first aim was to sound something like the Arctic Monkeys. But several shows in Tallinn’s Russian-speaking underground circuit – from which they come - proved that playing contemporary indie rock for metal, punk and hardcore oriented crowd, making up the vast majority of that scene, was not a key to success. Playing show after show to less than ten people usually kills the guts pretty fast.
However, that is not what happened with Junk Riot. The band kept writing new songs and building it’s own unique sound, that by now can be described as a high octane mixture of loud guitars, wild vocals, groovy bass riffs and pulsating drum beats.
In early 2008, Junk Riot was spotted by the mover and shaker Risto Karupoeg, who soon started taking care of the band. From here on everything started to move smoothly upwards. Playing at esoteric scene events, Junk Riot quickly gained reputaton as an exciting live band, a fresh breath of air in smokey clubs. They recieved a lot of good feedback, their sound and approach were praised by prominent Estonian music bloggers, every next show attracted more and more people.
By now, Junk Riot is among one of the first Russian-speaking Estonian bands to be fully accepted by the Estonian indie scene. Band has not released any EPs or LPs yet. Their success is entirely built on mouth-to-mouth buzz and two demo tracks on their MySpace page.
