Review Of Vol.2
The 2nd instalment of 'The Chop Shop' comes from Californian born &
Cork based Justin O' Donnell aka 'Jus Me'. The winner of The C.I.T.
'Hit The Decks' competition in 2005 offers up a grittier approach with
his submission all cut, scratched, dropped & blended together in his
own particular way. To date he's aired his wares in 'The Savoy', 'Club
Isobar', 'Lebowski's', 'The L.V' & with the 'Elementary crew'. Expect
to see & hear more from him as he's on turntable duties for the
revered Tralee based hip hop group 'Lineage'.
(www.myspace.com/thelineagekrew) Inspiration wise he cites Kid Koala,
The C2C DJ.Team along with DJ.Shadow & Cut Chemist's 'Brainfreeze'
project as influences. So expect a similar approach here. The
collection is a bit disjointed in places but always interesting & one
of the most unique mixes I've heard in a long time.
It draws you in from the start with 'Perfect Circles' moving 'Lullaby'
& some fine 'transformer' scratching ( couldn't help squeeze the
reference in somehow) before pausing & continuing in an unpredictable
fashion throughout, this however is not meant as a negative but for me
only adds to the charm of the offering. The mix features more
traditional hip hop cuts from Blackilicous & Beastie Boys next to some
classic soul & more rock based numbers from Beck & Bjork. Here the
DJ.breaks off an excellent display of skill over the Icelandic one's
vitriolic 'Army of me' & for me this is where his ability really
shines. Also on the roster you'll find DJ Krush, Buck 65 & 'Eddy
Senay's' funky take on 'Ain't no sunshine'. I was pleased too to hear
one of my own personal favourites 'A Tribute to T.R.O.Y.' from 'J
Rawls'. Jam resident Colm Kenefick also gets 2 nods 1 being his
excellent remix of Lupe Fiasco's 'I Gotcha' here in instrumental form
with more displays of dexterity from 'Jus Me' & the 2nd being 'Dancin'
Skulls'. File this one under home listening for those who like the
rawer & less polished approach to Hip Hop, Soul & Funk.

born in california but cork, ireland is my adopted home where ive lived for the last 14 years. i have an unhealthy obsession with records. its a serious and financially crippling addiction. ive been djing for about 10 years now. venues ive played include the savoy, club iso bar, cypress avenue, club head bang bang, slante, long island, lebowskis, lv, head of the river, etc.. these days my main focus is handling turntablist duties for a tralee based hip hop group called lineage and a hip hop/funk band called the impressionists. the lineage album is nearly finished. check their myspace in my top friends for updates.
