Review: ACOUSTIC magazine issue 15
'Level Crossing' "Justin Breame is an exceptionally talented Guitarist who should be commended for the fact that his new CD is entirely self-financed, recorded in his own studio and all of the instruments (with the exception of the whistles) are played by him. He's also well capable of writing a decent melody and making his guitar speak to the listener. Breame is certainly a talent worth keeping an eye on." Brett Callwood.
Just thought I would let you know a little bit about the instruments I have used on this album.
The Guitars parts are mostly performed on my fantastic Collings D1, which I feel is the nicest Acoustic Guitar I have ever owned! Some tracks were performed on James Goodall Trad. Dreadnought, again a very nice Guitar, unfortunately not mine! And there are also a couple parts played on an old Yamaha FG-340 which I was very fortunate to pick up at a car boot sale for £25!!
The Mandolin I use is a Lebeda F5 Premium which has a beautiful bell-like tone, but can also bark and bite when needed!
The Mandola is a Michael Kelly.
The Bouzouki is a lovely Fylde Touchstone.
Banjo by Ozark. Not handmade or anything, but pretty good for the money.
The Fiddle is turn of the century German, maker unknown.
Baritone Ukelele by Greg Bennett, again good value and very well made.
Bodhran by Paul McAuley. The best!
I think thats most of them!
Something I think is always overlooked is the really anorak/anal stuff like picks and strings. I use Wegen picks for both Guitar and Mandolin, he uses an incredibly hard material which sounds and feels great. I had a problem getting them for myself so I started importing them from him directly.
I now stock quite a few of his main range as well as picks from Dugain, another hand maker.
The same goes for strings, a great and friendly company from the UK called Newtone. These are very high quality strings using a cylindrical core. Available for all the main stringed instrument types, they also come with loop or ball ends for the Mandolin family, which is very useful.
If you want to find out more about the hand made picks and strings send me a mail and I will send you some prices and details.
Influences
Influences, influences! So Many! If you like Bluegrass guitar and Mandolin, then you will like this. If you like the sounds of the traditional music of the british Isles, then again you should find some comfort on this CD. And if you like something a little off the wall, such as some eastern tinged Banjo/gong action, you won't be dissapointed. Think that covers it!
Check out the 3 new tracks on the player! Tune for Barry.U is for solo Baritone Ukelele, Angeline the Baker is my take on an old classic, and Bazzar is a slightly off the wall celtic/indian banjo lead tune I came up with just before I finished the album.Hope you like the Vid. Just me and my Dad having a play and Please!!! Let me know what you think of the sample tracks off the new CD!
I'm Justin Breame, I play Bluegrass Guitar and Mandolin, as well as a few other instruments on the CD!
The CD is a mix of original and traditional tunes mostly in the Blugrass and Celtic styles.
There are however a few slightly different tracks, such as 'Tune for Barry.U' written for solo Baritone Uke, and the Mandolin Quartet 'Coleraine'.
So keep those minds open!
There is also some cool whistle playing by the lovely Catherine Baker on a few of the tracks.
I don't do wind instruments!
