    Justine's Interests
General

I love spending time with my Mom and daughter; reading, writing, cooking (eating), dancing while cleaning house, graphic art, poetry, politics, rescuing stray dogs and cats, collecting quotes and recipes.

Movies

After a half century of popcorn and Milk Duds: Gone With the Wind, Bambi, The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, The Bridges of Madison County, Pretty Women, Thelma and Louise, The Piano and Nine and a Half Weeks. I love movies with cowboys, gorgious long haired warrior poets and buckeling swashes. My two favorite actresses are Meryl Streep and Katherine Hepburn, and I adore Angelina Joli. My favorite actors are Al Pachino and Johnny Depp.

Television

I’m a Star Trek fan, both the original and Next Generation. I’m not a regular viewer but I watch NUMB3RS, The Daily Show, Ellen, Dancing with The Stars, reruns of M*A*S*H and Friends and I've never picked a single winner on American Idol. I’m a political news junky, two of my favorite shows are, Meet the Press with Tim Russert and Hardball with Chris Matthews.

Books

Not surprisingly I’ve always loved books, libraries and bookstores. Some of my favorites include: Gone With The Wind, The Professor by Charlotte Bronte. A short, short list of authors: everything by Mark Twain, John Grisham, Catherine Coulter, Fay and Jonathon Kellerman, Amy Tan and James Patterson. There’s a copy of the paperback Drop Dead Gorgeous by Linda Howard on my nightstand and I’m also an avid reader of several newspapers, another excellent source of fiction.

About me:

This should really go under the Hero’s section; but, to understand who I am, you would have to know my hero: my Grandmother. It was Gramma who taught me to read and play piano by ear at four, how to cook and sew, love pretty cloths and to sing harmony while drying the dishes. More importantly she taught me what it meant to be a woman.

Gramma was born on the Azor’s Island of Terceira. Because “she was only going to be a wife“, Gramma never attended a day of school but taught herself to read and write in five languages. She was thirty years old when my grandfather asked her to marry him, and brought a lug box of sweet potatoes as a gift. She told me no one else wanted to marry her because “she wasn’t pretty, but that was alright, because Eleanor Roosevelt was ugly too, and she was one of the greatest women that had ever lived.”.

Gramma was a midwife, and teacher to any woman in the area that wanted to learn. She delivered babies, colts and calves, stitched up cuts, and kissed boo boos. She was the smartest woman I have ever met, but believed professional wrestling was real. She went to church every Sunday, smoked cigarettes when Grampa was in bed and had a since of humor that would make even an erotic author blush.

Gramma couldn’t stand “Rock an’ Slop” but came to my gigs more often than my parents ever did. She would proudly tell anyone that would listen, “Justine’s my granddaughter, and she can really play pretty when she wants.

And, Gramma was the first member of my family that I told I was bi. She just gave me a hug and said, “you’re just as good as anyone else Honey, you’ll just know twice as much love and twice as much heartache.”

And as always, Gramma was right.

Who I'd like to meet:

.

Princess Diana, Mary Magdalene, Anaïs Nin, Calamity Jane, Zorro, Angelina Joli, Cleopatra, Mark Twain, and May West.
Sappho, John Lennon, Mahatma Gandhi, Peta Wilson, Pauline Reage, Billie Holiday, Eve, and Jean-Luc Picard.
And, the publisher of my first novel!
