PLEASE NOTE: This is the official Myspace of Justin Sullivan solo. Justin reads your messages and we thank you for your input, support and kind words. All the best from the JS Myspace Crew.
As founder member and main songwriter with the legendary underground cult rock band NEW MODEL ARMY, Justin Sullivan has written and recorded more than 200 songs. Across ten studio albums, the band have explored a wide range of musical ideas and influences while still remaining true to their roots in the thrilling and the uncompromising. Working outside the mainstream music industry, the band have amassed a fanatically dedicated world-wide following to whom the songs, the passionate live performances, the poetic lyrics and the ideas contained within them, are as important, if not more so, than the group themselves. Since 1985, Justin has been the only original member of an ever-evolving line-up which has seen 14 personnel changes in 28 years of continuous writing, recording and touring.
Parallel to the group, Sullivan has always maintained an active solo career
giving live performances in all kinds of different situations. In 2003, he released a first solo album, 'Navigating by the Stars', an album of contemplative music far from adrenalin driven rush of the full band, with musical contributions from Danny Thompson and Mark Feltham as well as from members of NMA. The release co-incided with a cargo-ship voyage across the Atlantic and was followed by a long tour. In 2006, he wrote a specially-commissioned 'Bradford Soundscape', an album of interviews and music to accompany Bradford University’s presentation of Joolz Denby’s photographic installation piece 'Bradford - True North’ . It is a moving and powerfully emotive tribute to the city that has been his home for 32 years and the inspiration for so many of his songs. It is hoped that this CD will soon be distributed into every home in the area. Also in 2006 he was commissioned by the Illuminate Festival to write a soundtrack for ‘Wuthering Heights‘ featuring readings from that novel set to club-based music.
Sullivan was born in Jordans, Buckinghamshire into a large Quaker
family - his father's side of the family being Irish Canadian and his mother's London English. He moved to Bradford in 1976. He has always had a passionate
interest in both politics and history, which has lead to his well-known
activities in support of many social causes. Over the years this has seen
him active in support of British mineworkers, European anti-fascist groups,
road protest organisations, drug rehabilitation clinics, the homeless raising awareness of the plight of asylum seekers in the UK.
New Model Army’s home base remains the city of Bradford, where Justin lives
and has his own recording facility.
