Just Music Company Profile

Just Music is an independent South African music company with offices in Johannesburg. The company was formed in June 2003 by Karl Anderson – previously the Marketing Director for EMI South Africa’s International Division, responsible for several key international record Labels, including Capitol, Virgin & Zomba. Anderson – who has more than 18 years experience in the music industry was formerly the A&R/Marketing Director at RPM Record Company (later amalgamated into Gallo Record Company).

Just Music aims to be South Africa’s leading independent music business, signing and developing freshest and most exciting international and homegrown talent. Anderson’s deep-seated belief in the power of the independent music scene forms the foundation of his move into creating Just Music.

In just five short years, Just Music has secured licensing deals to represent the following international labels in South Africa: Beggars Group (Including XL, 4AD, Rough Trade and Matador), Ministry of Sound, Hed Kandi, Hidden Beach, Dramatico, Downtown Music, ATO Records, Vagrant Records and Ninja Tune. Just Music is also the South African home artists such as Santogold, Adele, Katie Melua, Jill Scott, The White Stripes, Asa, Joe Thomas, Deborah Cox, The Raconteurs, M.I.A., Carla Bruni, Vampire Weekend, Jem, September, Madcon, +Live+, Jose Gonzalez, The Gossip, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Dave Matthews Band & Secondhand Serenade to name but a few.

In 2006 Just Music started signing domestic talent and in just a short time has one of the most exciting domestic line ups in the country including SAMA Award winners Karen Zoid (Best Female Artist) Lark (Best Alternative Album) & Harris Tweed (Best DVD); SAMA nominated artists Flat Stanley as well as dance act Flash Republic, SA’s hottest new alternative rock act Zebra & Giraffe and Dear Reader (recently signed to City Slang for the world).

Just Music has a vision that is bold, dynamic and hard to fault. “With all of the consolidation and mergers that are taking place globally & artists leaving major labels, we’re starting to see more and more great music company people & artists going the ‘DIY/indie label route’ and Just Music will be able to work with those individuals. The independent music scene has always been at the forefront of breaking & discovering some of the most exciting new artists and music.”
