Barbara Adly was living in her native Montreal when Pierluigi Aielli came for an extended visit from Italy one colder than usual April. Holed up in her plateau apartment, they wrote their first few songs. A year later, Barbara hopped on a plane to Italy and decided to stay. They kept writing songs, started playing shows and Juta [yu-ta] was born. With Dario Mazzucco and Pietro Canali, those same songs got dressed their Sunday best to tour Italy. In 2007 they played at Il Cantiere, a squatted (yet romantic!) theatre in Rome as well as the summer stages of parks and beaches all along the Italian peninsula, from Rimini, through Florence and south to Apulia. In October that same year, Barbara crossed the Atlantic again, but going the other way, and this time five strong. Joined by Ettore Formicone, friend and double-bassist extraordinaire, Juta was set to play its first North American shows, one in New York and two in Montreal (one was for the Pop Montreal festival and the other was with friends Mike O'Brien and David Macleod at the Sala Rossa), just before enlisting the sonic savvy of Howard Bilerman at the hotel2tango studio to record their debut album. Thirteen days and a few dozen bagels later, "Untwined" was mixed and in the able hands of "Montreal Mastering guy" Harris Newman. What you are listening to is the finished result. Now all they have to do is release it!
