My Fellow Americans
Friends, Fellow Americans, Liberals and Conservatives, Democrats and Republicans,
We have a problem, and please let me stress, WE have a problem. Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men's public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained when released Monday afternoon.
Craig's arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.
He has since denied being gay and claims to be innocent of all charges. However, the evidence does appear to be overwhelming. Republicans are looking to have his head on a platter and distance themselves from this scandal.
Listening to the news last night, I walked in just as some Republican I did not recognize was saying that Larry Craig has made the Republicans look like buffoons. Later last night I heard that the approval rating of congress is 18-19%. Congress appears to be stalled, can't agree on anything and none of our problems are getting solved. We have a crisis in health care. Our educational system is failing. There are national security issues that cannot be agreed upon. We have a very serious problem with illegal immigrants. And to top it all off, we have well over 150,000 armed forces in Iraq.
I have a question…Did it take Larry Craig for us to notice that congress is a bunch of buffoons? Have we all been asleep at the wheel? This guy didn't make anybody look like buffoons, they did it to themselves. Congress is a disaster. It scares me. The 18-19% approval rating is clearly deserved.
I have read recently in blogs that what a politician does on his own time is his business and should not be an issue. I say OK, as long as his behavior is not a distraction to his job. Is that too much too ask? I guess that I would also ask that his/her poor behavior not occur when he/she is on the clock. Shouldn't we be able to expect that from our representatives and senators?
Another thought that occurs to me is that this two party system is not working too well. I have seen good candidates in this presidential campaign that don't have a chance because they haven't gotten the right amount of media attention, regardless of their record and where they stand on issues. If they don't do well in certain primaries, they can hang it up, and they do. It's almost like you can sit there and watch the good ones fall away, and you knew it would happen.
And lastly, there is the division within the country. You are a Democrat or a Republican. You are a Liberal or a Conservative. These labels do not just describe how people think and vote, and what their political philosophies are, but these labels dictate what they will think. A liberal will accept all of the Liberal views and convince himself/herself that the Conservatives are in a conspiracy against them. The Conservatives think the Liberals are crazy and want to give the whole country away and raise taxes. So where does this feud get us?
I think it is time we started to do our homework. Did you know that if you Google "Obama's voting record" you can see every decision Obama made. You can check party platforms. Every candidate has a web site. You can virtually check up on any politician. Of course it would be prudent to evaluate the sources you come up with. If you get your Information from a blog it is most likely biased. The point is that there is a wealth of information available, and we should try to be informed. Have you ever watched J-Walking on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno? There are people walking around out there that can't recognize Dick Cheney when you show them his picture. As a nation we are not informed.
I totally disagree that character is not an issue. I think we should make every effort to avoid the candidate that is likely to bring disgrace to his office. Scandals are a distraction, especially if the offense occurred while they were on the job. I think we should elect people with character, and who are honest, and who will represent their constituents.
An article appeared in an online publication called Capitol Hill Blue in 1999. The article listed various problems that members of congress were involved in. This has resulted in an email which has floated around for years. So the list is a little dated, but I will bet that it is not much different today. It is listed in Snopes as "Multiple" (some true some false). The reason for this listing is that much of the information cannot be proven conclusively. However, there are enough problems identified that it is obvious what the problem is.
Here's our congress:
36 - have been accused of spousal abuse
7 - have been arrested for fraud
19 - have been accused of writing bad checks
117 - have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
3 - have done time for assault
71 – repeat, 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
14 - have been arrested on drug-related charges
8 - have been arrested for shoplifting
21 - currently are defendants in lawsuits, and
84 - have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year (1999)
And that is our illustrious congress. I think we need to get together and change something. The hell with Dems and Reps.
Below are two lists. The top list is Republicans and the bottom list is Democrats. These lists contain the scandals that have occurred in that party in the last several years. There are errors in these lists because some are just allegations and haven't been proven, and some are not all that relevant, like a guy married a woman that had been married 3 times, who cares? Also, these lists are not complete lists of all the scandals. There are more. I am posting these lists for one reason, to show the extent of the scandal our political system is suffering from. To give a sketch of the character of the congress we have elected.
I truly wish we could stop our bickering and divisiveness, put our heads together and elect some people that will do something. We can complain all we want, but here's the deal, your fellow Americans elected these people. This is not the fault of congress or one party or the other, this is our fault. If you put no effort into this, you reap what you sew. Let's get together on this folks.
A Few Republican Scandals
