J-Wess breaks boundaries with a dramatically sexy black and white video for his new single, which illustrates a forbidden passion unfolding against the crowds of the 1920’s bourgeois. The uncompromising sound and vision from one of Australia’s most influential urban producers is sure to excite music lovers around the country.
Anything for You will be available from all good record stores from August 21st 2009.
‘GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC ... BOTTOM LINE’
Relevant indeed, particularly coming from one of the most influential producers on the Australian music scene today. J-WESS exploded onto the charts with his debut album ‘Tha LP’, an uncompromising delivery of the hottest Urban sound and vision for 2004. While his debut journey spawned two Top 20 ARIA singles, (‘Bang This,’ and ‘Luv Ya’), a Top 10 ARIA Gold-selling single (‘What Chu Want’), his hard nosed commitment to deliver full strength on his forthcoming follow up album 'THE DIRECTORS CUT' is rock solid.
Aspiring to create a new benchmark with Rendition Entertainment, a purpose-built vehicle for discovering new talent, ‘THE DIRECTORS CUT’ testifies to a passion that has ensured only world class standards reach the speakers. Still recruiting talent the old fashioned way, a love for receiving demos and attending live performances is the methodology that created an evidently fine line-up on the new album. “I still love doing it the old fashioned way, getting into the trenches looking for raw talent with that un-doctored sound you can’t hide. That’s how I found Jerson Trinidad, I noticed him performing in a club, that’s my kind of vibe”.
Australia’s sweeping relationship with his debut album ‘Tha LP’ allowed us to firmly glimpse the appeal of the signature J-WESS sound, evidently a healthy appetite from TV and press followed closely behind him. ARIA nominated for ‘Best Urban Release 2004’, and the recipient of an APRA title for ‘Most Performed Dance Work 2004’, an MTV Video Music Award ‘Best Urban Video 2005’, and a blaze of nationally broadcasted TV appearances, launched J-WESS into a distinct league of his own.
“It’s about giving people choice to decide what they like, rather than being bound by limitations”
Stepping out from the studio into videos and on-stage initially wasn’t high on the agenda, with nothing much changed it seems. Keeping exceptionally busy over the last 18 months crafting hot new material for his highly anticipated follow up album ‘THE DIRECTORS CUT’, plus time abroad enjoying the diversity of the international Urban music scene, J-WESS is more fervent than ever about producing hits. While we heard his distinctive vocal presence on most of ‘'THA LP', and its consecutive ARIA chart singles, J’s passion as a producer and the steering wheel of the now active ‘Rendition Entertainment’ Label, is eminent. A million miles from the artist who landed a final position in the 2004 scoop of Cleo Magazine’s Bachelor of The Year competition, J is quick to express his love for making great music. “Good music is good music, bottom line, and that’s why production is my full time job. When I made ‘Bang This’ I really realised the power of production and the ingredients a producer can actually bring to the table. It’s the same with ‘Trippin’, I love the way it translated to young and old, and internationally. Club Dj’s switched onto it, and I’ve had a 12 year old kid and a 60 year old both say it’s their favourite. Reggaeton hasn’t exploded in Australia like other parts of the world, so the positive response spoke loud to me. As a producer, for me it’s about giving people choice to decide what they like, rather than being bound by limitations”.
A formula that proved unshakable for his debut album, J’s commitment to showcasing talent exclusively from an all-Australian line up not only shook misconceptions of the level of Urban music that can be produced on local soil, but just how open Australia is to home-grown Urban releases. Critics more concerned with a pigeon-holed analysis of the Aussie music scene and a pre-occupation with J’s Australian citizenship fell flat with the undeniable victory of ‘Tha LP’. The ultimate decision was fortunately left in the hands of the Australian public which sent J’s second single ‘What Chu Want’ straight into ARIA Top10 Gold sales status, topped off with and an appearance on Channel 10's Celebrate! Australia Day Live (January 2004), seeing J-WESS celebrate his success nationally with over 1.5 million viewers.
“My ambition isn’t to shake up the definition of Australian music”
“I just want to make unforgettable music with fine talent, that’s why I’m doing this job. My ambition isn’t to shake up the definition of Australian music. When I’ve met people and they say ‘I cant wait for your next record, I loved the first album’, that in itself is a reminder of my responsibility to any individual that takes their hard earned dollar to buy something I’ve put my soul into. For me it doesn’t get better than that”.
