Jym Mooney has been making a name for himself on the folk scene in Milwaukee and across Wisconsin for over thirty years. In addition to performing his witty, insightful songs in coffeehouses, clubs, and festivals, he has appeared on radio, TV, and cable. He has also been one of the driving forces behind The Coffee House, a Milwaukee institution since 1967, and one of the country’s oldest continuing coffeehouses. Jym has released several recordings to positive critical response, and his work has received airplay on radio stations in Milwaukee and Madison, as well as on the Wisconsin Public Radio network. Jym's hilarious song "Murphy (The Three-Legged Beer Swillin' Hound)" has aired multiple times on the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento Show. His powerful anti-war song "I Have Come To Take My Boy Home" has been sung and recorded and posted on blogs around the world. Jym's songs have been recorded and performed by Jiggernaut, Sweet Diversity, Fritz Schuler, the Starvin' Band, Jonathon Leubner, Patty Stevenson, Brett Kemnitz, Ghost of a Rose, Skip Jones, and the Moxie Chicks. He performs regularly with his wife, Carol Lee Hopkins, both as a duo and as members of The Moxie Chicks. Jym and Carol produced the 2002 anthology CD "One Ball of Clay - Songs of Peace and Hope," featuring original songs of peace from fifteen Milwaukee WI area folk and acoustic musicians. The Moxie Chicks released their first CD "Cross Me, Fool!", which was produced by Jym, in 2006. Jym released two CDs in 2008: his solo project "Mooney Tunes and Maynard Melodies" and a CD with Larry Penn, "Songs for Frank Zeidler." His newest release in "LIVE...now and then" which features live recordings from 1981-2009.
Personally, I love Molasses! "that awful sugar rush!" Zeidler was quite a character. Definitely the smartest and most dedicated man I ever met that was wrong.
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...
Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
I recently started listening to your CD East Side Guy, and i must say i am in love with your lyrical creativity. I am the son of Caveman, whom you may not remember, but he is on the list of people you thanked on the CD. I hope you are still creating wonderful music, Peace and Love.
We will be playing this Thursday, June 19th at Linneman's. The show starts at 10:00 and singer/songwriter Carrie Melton will open the show. Hope to see you there!
“I propose to offer vigorous leadership and action with only one purpose-- the public welfare.” -First Inaugural Address of Frank Zeidler, Mayor of Milwaukee and Sewer Socialist
We enjoyed seeing you front and center on stage at the Coffee House for your CD release of Mooney Melodies and Maynard Tunes. You are a master of words and it was delightful to listen to the turn of phrase, clever innuendos and insights. We can't wait to hear the next new song! Your devoted fans, Barb and Tom
