MSN Goes to the Movies: There Are Secrets and There Are Secrets WELL, THE ACTING WAS GOOD— I know a few things about film festivals. Like, no matter how big or small, moneyed or struggling, glam or grassroots, the opening night selection of any fest is probably pretty good. Beyond that, much of the program is quite possibly mediocre. A few films are really bad. One or two may be intentionally bad. But we go to festivals for the thrill of making discoveries, and every festival usually has its share of those, too. I’ve never attended The Method Fest, the 11th edition of which takes place in Agoura and Calabasas March 26-April 2, but have always been intrigued by the concept of a film festival that hangs its hat on acting. Isn’t that like a cooking show that focuses on heated food? Plus, I was a fan of critic John Anderson, who helps program The Method Fest, long before he clocked nutty sales agent Jeff “The Dude” Dowd this past Sundance. Sounds to me like Dowd had it coming. So I asked the Method Fest press office for a preview DVD of the opening night film (“Adam,” starring Rose Byrne and Hugh Dancy, which also made news at Sundance by virtue of its acquisition by Fox Searchlight), which they couldn’t provide, and one or two others they thought were good, which they could, and did. In fact, they sent me eight features and a short. I watched six of the eight and am most excited about “Anytown,” directed by David Rodriguez, who opens his movie with a creepy patience that demands your attention while underscoring how computer file-sharing has forever changed our youth culture. The main cast, playing high school seniors bubbling with hormones and war lust, is terrific all around, to the degree that you trust them even when, during key scenes, the director doesn’t cut to close-ups of their faces when most would. But Rodriguez clearly has talent, and his movie reminded me of tragic youth classics like “Taps” and “The Outsiders.” As timely as “Tokyo Sonata,” and just as American, “Anytown” is, in its own way, unforgettable. www.methodfest.com BY JEREMY WALKER Anytown USA, 93 MIN, WORLD PREMIERE Director: Dave Rodriguez Writer: Dave Rodriguez, Zak Meyers Producer: Dave Rodriguez, Matt Keith, George Kostuch Cast: Matt O'Leary, Marshall Allman, Jonathan Halyalkar, Sam Murphy 'Anytown,' starring Matt O'Leary ('Brick,' 'American Son') revolves around a middle-American teenage boy who is negatively affected by the proliferation of the media surrounding terrorism and the war in Iraq. In every field of human endeavor, he that is first must perpetually live in the white light of publicity. Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition, the punishment fierce denial and detraction. When a man's work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work is merely mediocre, he will be left severely alone. If he achieve a masterpiece it will set a million tongues 0n fire. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a common-place painting. Whatsoever you write, or paint, or play, or sing, or build; no one will strive to surpass or to slander you unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. Long after a great work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it cannot be done. Spiteful little voices will hate. The Leader is assailed because he is a Leader, and the effort to equal him is merely added proof of that leadership. Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depreciate and to destroy, but only confirms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. There is nothing new in this, it is as old as the world and as old as the human passions of envy, fear, greed, ambition, and the desire to surpass. And it all avails nothing. If the leader truly leads, he remains the leader. Master Poet, Master Painter, Master Workman; each in his turn is assailed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. That which is great makes itself known, no matter how loud the clamor of denial. That which deserves to live, Lives

NEW YORK -- Natasha Henstridge has joined the cast of Dave Rodriguez's "Anytown," an indie drama that examines a racist high school attack and its aftermath. Henstridge (ABC's "Eli Stone") will play a news anchor covering an attack on an Indian-American boy by two fellow students who videotape the crime. The event forces her to examine the media's post-Sept. 11 role in fueling hate crimes committed by youth. Rodriguez ("Push") is producing and directing the project as well as co-writing the script with Zak Meyers. Matt O'Leary ("Brick"), Marshall Allman ("Prison Break"), Jonathan Halyalkar and Paul Ben-Victor also star. K2 Pictures, 13 Steps Entertainment and Dirty District Entertainment are producing. The film is shooting in Los Angeles after a stint in Louisiana. The Collective's Shaun Redick is repping worldwide sales rights. Henstridge is repped by Paradigm and Dave Fleming at Mosaic Media Group. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, PLEASE CONTACT: Mark Pogachefsky / Guido Götz, 323-933-3399, ggotz@mprm.com K|2 PICTURES TO TELL STORY OF BOBBY DESSELLE IN “OUTTA SIGHT, OUTTA MIND” COMPANY ALSO ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF TWO NEW DIVISIONS: K2G AND K|2 PICTURES PRODUCTION SERVICES Los Angeles, January 9, 2009 – K|2 Pictures will be producing OUTTA SIGHT, OUTTA MIND – the story of Bobby Desselle, one of the most successful cocaine dealers in the United States, it was announced by George M. Kostuch, CEO of K|2 Pictures. The film is being packaged by ENDEAVOR, with production slated to begin in spring 2009. Kostuch also revealed plans about several upcoming Sci-Fi Channel projects THE QUESTING BEAST: PART 1 is being developed by K|2’s newly formed genre division K2G, with Kostuch aiming to deliver the Sci-Fi Channel its own television version of THE LORD OF THE RINGS via the three part series of made-for-television feature films. Kostuch said "We've delivered two projects to the network already and we just went out and made them on our own with the thought of the Sci-Fi Channel in mind. We hope that THE QUESTING BEAST: PART 1 follows the same path of what we've done before and we hope to have the network more involved with the early development process". These projects follow the Sci-Fi Channel’s acquisitions of K2G's LOCKJAW: RISE OF THE KULEV SERPENT, starring Hip Hop icon DMX, and MUTANTS, starring Michael Ironside (TOP GUN) and Steven Bauer (SCARFACE). K|2’s already completed drama ANYTOWN is slated to debut at various festivals in 2009. K|2 has turned its primary focus on the upcoming Berlin Film Market for the ANYTOWN initial sales push and is focusing on the Cannes Film Festival for it's world premiere. ANYTOWN centers on a Middle American teenage boy who is affected by 9/11, terrorism and the war in Iraq, and becomes involved in an isolated High School altercation that escalates into a hate crime which shocks the entire nation. The film is directed by Dave Rodriguez, co-written by Rodriguez and Zak Meyers, and stars Matt O’Leary (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD), Marshall Allman (“Prison Break”), Dan Wells (PUSH), Paul Ben-Victor ("Entourage", “The Wire”) with John Savage (THE DEER HUNTER) and Natsha Henstridge (“Eli Stone”, SPECIES). K|2 Pictures and K2G are Baton Rouge based production companies focusing on low budget, genre-based films that are fully financed and produced in the state of Louisiana K|2 Pictures focus on more artistic films based on more difficult and edgyl content while K2G focus centers on genre based projects. . K|2 Pictures has also just recently announced the launch of the K|2 Pictures Production Services Division which focuses exclusively on helping filmmakers from outside of the state of Louisiana successfully complete their films with K|2PS'S help. K|2PS'S utilizes relationships with local Louisiana vendors to get film productions better rates from hotel rooms to rental cars to tax credit sales. This new division also utilizes K|2's deep rooted political connections to help productions put out fires during a production. After successfully producing nine films as a partner of H|K Pictures, George M. Kostuch, CEO, established K|2 Pictures in late 2006. The core of the company is made up of CEO Kostuch, newly hired President/CFO, Luigi Ghilardi II, who now brings several years of high level international banking experience to the K|2 team and also Co-President of Production, Matt Keith. Ghilardi stated ,"I am very excited to be a part of a growing company with such a passion for what they do and who are not afraid to take a few calculated risks. I think that my past experience in the banking business can only help take the K|2 brand to an entirely new and higher level". As two of the most knowledgeable and experienced Louisiana born and bred filmmakers, Kostuch and Keith have produced over 20 films. Joining Kostuch, Ghilardi and Keith, are a staff made up of talented Louisiana residents including Amir Valinia (Director), Ron Finberg (Unit Production Manager/Executive Producer), Jarred Coates (Unit Production Manager), Beth Beard (Line Producer) and Jeremy Woolsey (Production Designer). The Louisiana, National and International film industries have only had a taste of what the K|2 Pictures team has to offer. The “Young, Punk Underdogs” of K|2 Pictures and K2G are eager to utilize the state of Louisiana for many more film and television productions throughout 2009 and into the future.
