k3 have been referred to as the enfants terribles of the Austrian Jazz scene.
With their fusion of acoustically and electronically generated beats and sounds, the three unconventional artists walk on a tightrope between pop and free jazz.
Their genre-busting style oscillates between dub, jazz, noise and drum and base and the three musicians boldly defy conventions and create a space of artistic freedom. In doing so, they play jazz in its original meaning: crossing borders, pushing boundaries, keeping aloof from clichés and mainstream, leaving the beaten track of academic, inane high-speed jazz.
Improvisation, spontaneity and humor are the main ingredients of the soup they cook up during their performances.
k3 reinvent themselves with every show. They alienate, destroy and recreate - and never remain the same. Their sound contradicts reproduction and thereby allows the audience to experience the unique feeling of becoming part of the development of k3.
Some may call it Jazz - we call it art, anyways! k3... corners and edges.
k3 are currently working on their new album which is to drop in January 2010. Stay tuned for details!
Projects:
k3... goes India
Ranajit Sengupta – Sarod, voc; Samir Nandi, a.o.– Tablas; Herbert Könighofer – saxes; Klaus Kircher – bass, guit.; Robert Kainar – drums, perc., electronics
The avant Jazz Trio k3 from Salzburg/Austria is well known for its aspiration to create new spaces of musical freedom at the crossroads of (Free-)Jazz, experimentation, pop, and electronics. For the last 7 years, the famous Indian sarod-artist Ranajit Sengupta and various tabla players, such as Samir Nandi, Prabir Kumar Mitra, a.o., have regularly joined in and explored the boundaries of these sound-scapes.
The fusion of classical Indian Ragas, i.e. relatively fixed patterns of improvisation and composition, with the acoustically and electronically generated sounds of the Austrians who have been referred to as ‘the enfants terribles’ of the Austrian Jazz scene, promises challenging musical experiences for both the musicians and the audience. In their music the artists involved in the project k3 goes India explore each other’s worlds and manage to express cultural differences as well as common grounds.
