About me:

Animal Behaviorist, humane dog trainer. I teach dogs. I train people. I help cats get better litter boxes. I teach people how to resolve behavioral problems in cats and dogs humanely. I detest the use of choke chains, pinch or prong collars, or shocking or jerking dogs to teach them. These just make animals afraid of you. I teach people to lead by example and through benevolent kindness. My website is www.AlanaStevenson.com. I am the author of "The Right Way the First Time: Teaching Your Dog Kindly and Humanely." It can be ordered on Amazon.

"Alana Stevenson's The Right Way the First Time is a welcome
addition to the chorus of positive dog training. Its beauty lies
in Alana’s direct approach. The book is easy to understand
and is fueled by Alana’s genuine and obvious love of animals.
She emphasizes the importance of educating dogs “the
right way, the first time,” which is an invaluable refrain.
If more and more people implement her suggestions,
more and more dogs...and people...will benefit.”

Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to Dog Training

“Finally! A 100 percent humane dog-training book!
We have been waiting a long time for this. No more
harsh methods. Just a gentle, caring approach with
rewards for good behavior. How refreshing! I would
love to see every dog guardian read this book.”

Ethical Treatment of Animals

“Alana Stevenson has done a fabulous service to
dogs and their guardians. She knows how a dog's mind
works, and her clear advice and positive approach
make training rewarding for both canine and human."

"For too many years, dogs have been unnecessarily
trained with harsh and combative methods. The Right
Way the First Time is straightforward, easily read, and
will assist caring dog owners in developing appropriate
behavior in a compassionate way and in a fashion that
will strengthen the bond between dog and owner."

Sorry for the lengthy comment - I should have written my own blog! I saved that to present to my father.
When he is here it is an ongoing war re the dogs and their training, so much so that my mother begs for us to please please stop arguing!

Its surprisingly difficult to find trainers that implement the positive reinforcement. theres an abundance of classical trainers onmyspace though. Do you have any pointers on how to locate such people.

I saw your site under someone else's friends list. I was actually thinking of picking up a copy of your book as a gift for a friend who has three dogs. Her husband is a mail carrier and one of the dogs would wait for him on his route and he would always have a snack for him. After a couple of weeks, he noticed that this dog was always outside and asked everyone in the neighborhood about the dog. Everyone thought it was a stray because it would be outside roaming around looking for food all the time. So he took the dog home and has been there ever since. I love happy stories like this. There are still nice, caring people out there!
Best regards,
Barb

Thanks for being our friend! We are huge supporters of positive reinforcement and love the work you do for dogs! I refered a friend to your page last week and she bought your book to use in conjunction with a local dog trainer who also uses positive reinforcement. So far her house is turning into a pretty peaceful place. :) Thanks again for all the work you do and your friendship!
Take care,

Alana:
Thank you so much for stopping by my site, and for your many compliments on my boy.
We certainly appreciate them.
He is a well loved dog indeed.
I have enjoyed looking at everything on your lovely site, as well as reading through your very informative Blogs, and looking at your beautiful photos.
I would like very much to read your book. I will look into buying a copy right away, as your methods are all what I have used on both of my dogs as well.
I am also a big fan of Ian, and NOT a fan of The Dog Whisperer.
I'm so happy to meet you on here.
Thanks again for taking the time to stop by and visit.
Sincerely,
Alice

Hi--Thanks for joining me at Prison Dogs: Hope Behind Bars, my book project. It's an amazing documentation of the most powerful rehabilitation programs within prison walls---for canines and humans both.

Out of shelters and off of "doggie death row" these programs are saving dogs that many have called "throwaways" before! And that's something we can all "Woof!" about!

Woof Woof!
