She's been virtually the laughing stock of the music industry for years. She's been laughed at outside the Nashville city limits by the likes of People Magazine, USA Today, Billboard, GAC Television, and on National Public Radio as Garrison Keillor's guest on "A Prairie Home Companion."
With KACEY JONES there's a lot to laugh about. Included amongst the many hats she wears is...a tiara. She is the Official Songstress for The Sweet Potato Queens and has performed LIVE in concert at the annual Sweet Potato Queens' Ball & Parade, in Jackson, MS, for the past seven years in a row. Kacey has written many songs for the SPQs that have become legendary among that clan, including "Never Wear Panties to a Party," "Show Up Naked, Bring Beer," and "Well-Behaved Women Rarely Make History."
Her latest project is the soundtrack to the hilarious new play, "NIPPLES TO THE WIND.' As Music Supervisor for the original soundtrack, Kacey contributed 15 of the 19 tracks on the CD (released nationally on 4/17/07). A follow-up to Kacey's last music-comedy project, "Every Man I Love is Either Married, Gay, or Dead..LIVE," her newest creation is not only stacked with comedy appeal, it's a showpiece for the vocal talent and comedy genius caught in the grooves.
In the hard work-a-day world of carving a national name as one of the brightest new musical humorists to break through in recent years, Kacey Jones is used to breaking the mold. Released in 2006, this critically acclaimed masterpiece was eligible in five categories for a Grammy nomination in 2007. A Grammy was not in the cards, this time, for Miss Jones, but the critics loved the project regardless. "I'm a singer-songwriter-musician first," says Jones. “I don't consider myself a stand-up comedienne but I enjoy making people laugh. I'm more in the tradition of musical humorists like Roger Miller, Mae West, and Tom Lehrer. I also enjoy singing a good ballad. That's why I recorded the tribute to Mickey Newbury. He wrote some of the most beautiful songs of our time."
If it all seems off the wall, it's totally sane in the world of Kacey Jones. Hers was, after all, the brilliant mind that conceived one of Nashville's most unique and revered cult groups, the all-girl group, "Ethel and The Shameless Hussies," who broke above the waves in the late 80's to mainstream nominations as "Comedy Act of the Year" on MCA Records. As lead singer and lead comedy writer, Kacey put the Shameless Hussies on America's national radar.
In 1997 Kacey signed with Curb Records and recorded one of the few original music/comedy albums ever released by a female artist in Nashville. "Men Are Some of My Favorite People," considered a classic by collectors, yielded two music videos, "1-900-Bubba" and "I Hate Your Lousy, Rotten, Stinkin' Guts But, I'm Not Bitter."
Further proving that her talents could produce more than just a few good laughs, Kacey entered the studio with legendary cult artist, Kinky Friedman, only to emerge as the producer of his critically acclaimed project, "Pearls in the Snow." Featuring Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, Delbert McClinton and others, the album reached the 1 spot on the Americana radio chart in 1999. In 2000 Kacey and Delbert recorded a duet titled, "You're The Reason Our Kids are Ugly." The single stayed at the top of the European country chart for nine weeks.
Movies were next to fall under her spell. Kacey contributed three original songs to the soundtrack of the multi-award-winning cult film, "Sordid Lives" starring Beau Bridges, Olivia Newton-John, Delta Burke, and Leslie Jordan. Could Broadway be next? "I would love to see "Nipples To The Wind" make it to Broadway" states Kacey. "Put me in coach, I'm ready to play!"
