In 1992 a small group of dedicated and civic-minded citizens sat down to discuss the possibility of creating a locally owned, locally operated and locally programmed community radio station in Grand Junction. It took seven years before the station made its first broadcast.
It is nothing short of remarkable that today, some eight years after that first broadcast, we are all the beneficiaries of that small band of dreamers. They created something very rare indeed: one of less than 200 local community radio stations in the whole country.
Equally remarkable, is than in a age of media consolidation, where more and more stations are owned by fewer and fewer giant corporations, KAFM has gown stronger with each passing year.
The recipe for this success story is quite simple: Provide a place where local folks can program alternative music genres ignored by the commercial stations, a place that is accessible by all people and organizations with something to contribute to their community, a place where all viewpoints are welcome, and treated with respect. Simple really...but increasingly hard to find in a media environment that seems to promote discord and polarized agendas over civil discourse and reason.
If you have been a part of this amazing homegrown success story, then you can be proud of what you have helped to create. Whether you are an old KAFM hand or one who has recently come to lend your support, you are part of a great tradition of citizen involvement and community.
We all carry the dream of those who dared to imagine such a place 15 years ago. And their vision is lifted up by the whole community.
