About me: Video, Animation, Sculpture, Performance, Painter
My cross-disciplinary approach confronts the spectator with a powerfully playful reassessment of identity as constructed by cultural institutions. Propelled by my own displacement as BBC (British Born Chinese), I reconsider my own identity and how I function within particular cultures; feeding into a conceptual process that seeks to eradicate rigid systems of logic and categorization.
My video pieces, installations and sculptures move action beyond the canvas. In glorious techni-colour, highly laboured, all are manifestations of an obsession with the “blob” aesthetic; a congealing of all matter into the order-chaos of life itself. Destroy and recreate. Roar.
Exhibitions range from Istanbul Biennial, Arnolfini, Whitechapel Galley and Tart, San Francisco. Residencies and collaborations include Grizedale Arts & Vitamin Creative Space, China, Cove Park, Munich and Libya with British Council & Liverpool Biennial.
Critical writing ranges from A-N to European Magazine, workshops include Tate to Manchester Art Gallery and Cornerhouse.

Munich Residency, Video: Madly Into Night plus paintings, 2007
Who I'd like to meet: Curators, artists, writers, directors, scratchologists, lyricists, boys boys girls girls
Madly Into Night, 1 minute 24 seconds from 5 minutes 30 seconds, 2007
Villa Waldberta, Munich, EU funded residency
Set in Bavaria, I fragment three realities; the global shame of the holocaust, local history of Ludwig II's colurful, mysterious rule, and personal love story of a Munich inhabitant. Assuming both role of the mad king and fated empress Sissi, I deploy physicality of body to enact my internal interpretation of these truths in relation to specific locations and prop/objects.

CROSSING DOCUMENTARY

My video 'Socking' platforms the voices in the UK textile and sock industry, delving into the vestiges and struggles of an industry in decline and cost implications to our environment. From the turning process of an established Nottingham sock manufacturer to origin of yarn and newly born goats of a Devon farm to ambitions of eco-aware production process. Beyond The Arch, 2007
1 minute excerpt from 15 minutes
The video was commissioned as part of a one night event– Beyond The Arch celebrating Chinese New Year, 2007 at Walk The Plank, Liverpool.
Departing from 19th century Blue Funnel Line, through boarding houses, laundrettes and arriving at present day Liverpool-Shanghai twinning. Chinatown and it's place within the city’s flux is set in context of its inhabitants and shifting historical, social, and economic transitions, juxtaposed with the artist's personal memories.

Residency La Friche de la Belle de Mai, Marseille, France, August-September 2009
Exhibition Art fair: Art-O-Rama, France, 11th-26th September 2009
www.art-o-rama.fr
The Bauhaus lab Marseille proposes an art residency inspired by Moholy-Nagy’s journey to Marseilles in 1929. His experimental film "Marseille Vieux-Port" will be the starting point for a reflection led by resident artists. Marseille’s urban development, a contemporary reinterpretation of the Bauhaus, and interdisciplinarity will also be discussed. A lecture programme orchestrated by actors from various fields of the arts, architecture and urbanism will feed this research process.
During the residency, ten artists from various fields - video, performance, sound, photography- will work within the structure. Lectures open to the public as well as multimedia workshops for children will also take place during those 3 weeks. During the exhibition period (2 weeks), the structure will host the works created by artists.

Cornerhouse: 'State Legacy': 'Chinese Art & Globalisation', 20 May-12th June 2009
PERFORMANCE AND DISCUSSION/ BRITISH INTERPRETATIONS OF CHINA AND CHINESE ART
A unique opportunity to question and unravel the complex impact of China’s advancing economy and culture on its rural landscape and Communist structure, as artist Kai-Oi Jay Yung facilitates Skype interaction with UK-based arts organisation Grizedale Arts and the eco-village-based Happy Stacking China project. Established artist Mike Chavez-Dawson gives a unique take on three questions relating to Chinese art and globalisation through a one-off live musical performance, followed by an hour in conversation with artist/curator Kwong Lee at Castlefield Gallery.
Kai-Oi Jay Yung explores her Chinese heritage and interdisciplinary practice, offering a unique personal insight into her artistic process that traverses an international diaspora of voices, platforms and processes. From FACT to Istanbul Biennial, the Sock to King Ludwig II, how does Contemporary Chinese art across the diaspora hinge upon its heritage? An hour’s discussion and debate will follow with an opportunity to discuss the contemporary art scene and marketplace via an E-Space Lab connection to Shanghai and a panel of locally based curators and artists.

PARADISE STORIES, programme of Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008
For BBC Radio interviews, images, footage and full details of this project see:
www.myspace.com/paradisestories
Paradise Stories simultaneously inhabited the space of two contrasting Liverpool venues. The highly polished traditionally architecture/design space of the Renew Rooms housed my interdisciplinary recreation and interpretation of Paradise whilst I deployed alternative space of The International Gallery to orchestrate works of selected international artists who deal with the utopian thematic complementarily. Surely more paradise for more inhabitants...
