ZERO TOLERANCE MAGAZINE ------ Kaleb, The Great British Invention
'There's a real swell of underground talent around the UK and Ireland right now, young bands are forging forward with real talent and promise, it's getting hard to find a really special outfit...but in Leicester's Kaleb I have! Rooted in the best Metal traditions of (John Bush-era) Anthrax, Pantera, Arch Enemy, Metallica, and Slayer, the quintet whip up a storm of chunky riffs and big hooks, to wonderfully mature effect. Nice one guys!' SIMON GAUSDEN - ZERO TOLERANCE MAGAZINE
ALTERNATIVE-ZINE ------ Kaleb, The Great British Invention
As someone who grew up during the 80's listening to a vast array of British thrash and heavy metal bands, I hold a soft spot for band's trying out their hand at re-creating that great musical area. Young Brits Kaleb were a pleasant surprise, creating what might be described as a combination of classic NWOBHM with heavier, thrash-oriented riffs, a-la Onslaught and Xentrix. This sounds is as can be expected from a self-released effort, its quite clear and the mix is fine, but the percussion lack any sharpness, again, since it’s a self released effort which probably cost as much as set menu in China Town, that can be forgiven. The main thing here is the music, and the band does great with that, some good riffs and solid rhythm section, the vocals are of the melodic sort, strong accurate, the opener "Testify" is a simple, anthem-like thrash number. "Disconnect" is a bit more sophisticated with a modern touch; again, the band makes it work, the lead section is great, it's evident the guys can play. This isn’t prefect, "Days In Chains" was a bit too simplistic for me, and the mid bass-section was overlong, but most the time these guys do it just right, "The Pariah" is one of heaviest tracks here, with some great lead sections and even death growls. With a proper budget this band could do well, they have the talent and their hearts are in the right place, as a self released effort, it doesn’t get much better than this. LORDS OF METAL ------ Kaleb, The Great British Invention
Tormentor Erich: Kaleb is a new band from Britain (what else did you think with a title like 'The Great British Invention') and they show up with a self-financed double CD. This is something, I admit, but on the other hand I also have to say that every CD clocks about 35 minutes. The music of Kaleb can be described as melodic heavy metal. The songs do have their moments and the singer has a reasonable voice as long as he doesn't go for the screams. The tracks are played enthusiastically and the band has the guts to give the guitar solos a lot of space. I can appreciate that, but on the other hand: after a couple of solo's it gets obvious that the level must get up here. Sometimes it all sounds a bit too simple. The band should also try to arrange the standard parts of the songs a bit different to keep things more interesting, and every now and then it looks like the production has a gap in the sound, and this is a pity. Conclusion: Kaleb is a band with potential, but they are not there yet. Rating: 62/100 http://www.lordsofmetal.nl
LIVE REVIEWS
NEON PREMOTIONS 28/8/07 Hope and Anchor Islington, playing with Firestorm and Zocalo Kaleb are next up - and they deliver their bracing set of British metal. There are two guitars to provide masses of stimulating lead lines while drums and bass absolutely fly along, but it is the singer who steals the show with a cracking high powered vocal delivery that cuts through the air like a hot knife through butter. Rythms are at break neck speed with a range of complex beats being fired out while exhilerating riffs rip out from the guitars. There's lashings of old skool metal influences here but the energy and freshness in the delivery are all the bands own. "The Howling" is as classic a piece of metal as you are likely to hear. A veritable explosion of an act that deliver a scintilating performance - go see 'em. NEON PREMOTIONS - http://www.neon-promotions.co.uk/
