I thought bios are a bit cliche, so here's a Q and A instead. Enjoy! peace :) &home_txt3=QandA (OZ style) &home_txt4= FULL NAME: Kalyan Tresha Ky
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I'm from two wonderful countries.... the majestic Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of China. My great-grandfather came from China and met a beautiful Cambodian lady- I dont know the exact details, but I keep imagining an escaped Chinese diplomat and an apsara meeting near a waterlily pond! Then the rest of is history. The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia with fascinating architectural temples, grand waterfalls and lots of smiley people.
WHAT DOES YOUR NAME MEAN?
Kalyan is a Cambodian name, but it's also an Indian name. Funnily enough, it's a male name in India but a very popular Cambodian female name. In the words of my mother, Kalyan means: "beauty, soft, gentle," but people always say: "Uh ya! Are you sure they named you properly?" as in their words: I'm "loud, feisty and outspoken," for a tiny girl. WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN LIFE? My mother - because she inspires me! She's in her fourties, endured the horrific events of the Cambodian Civil wars, ran across mine-infested fields, lived in refugee camps and detention centres, worked 23/hr days in factories in NZ when we arrived (it's the only job for refugees who cant speak English- she speaks Catonese and French...but they are not very useful in NZ and she's still going... now she works as a supervisor at Heritage Chocolate so she could get jobs for new migrants from Cambodia who cannot find a job elsewhere. My father - same reasons as above, and the fact that he's still going and he's in his sixties.
WHEN DID YOU START WRITING AND WHY? I grew up feeling rather isolated - I think it's because I lived far from the Cambodian settlement in New Zealand. Writing provided solace and relief. I lived in a little cottage behind CARE HOUSE in Te Atatu Peninsula first - T.A.B.C sponsored us from the Malaysian Detention Centre as part of their refugee program. Next, we lived in a garage behind this lady's house, and eventually moved to Suburb of Glendene. I spent a great deal of time sitting by the sea and rivers and jotting down almost everything! A keen observer. But I developed this (a) love for it - it eventually became my panacea, writing away any confusions or problems. When I'm sad, I write about it - then the sadness flutters away. I have thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories... and I've written four novels! hopefully I can publish them all one day. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST REGRET: Disobeying my parents. There have been a few occassions where I've disobeyed them as a child, and evidently I found out what they were saying is right - sometimes we don't see the light in the advice until we face the consequences - this thing was over the ever-so-cliche subject of a boy. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD TRADITION? Making houses out of sheets and putting them over tables. One girl jokingly asked me: "Were in born in the tent?" and I said: "Well...yes! in a ditch near a tent actually." :)
