Jonathan Nelson, the founder and main songwriter of Kampion, decided one day(after being in a few ok bands)to try to get something special together. He spent some time studying the art and craft of song writing, trying to figure out what separates a good song from a great song. He was all too aware of the reactions of his peers to his mediocre songs, when he could tell that in their heart of hearts that they just weren’t really impressed and just being polite.
After working hard and getting some strong songs written, he scoured the London music scene hunting for somebody whose musical talent was bigger than their ego. After several near misses and lucky escapes, he lucked out and bumped into the sultry voiced Elisa Prilleux . He was blown away by her soulful voice, a potent cocktail of Duffy, a shot of Adele with a Whinhouse chaser. Jon also discovered(to his delight) that Elisa was a talented songwriter and viola player and thus, kampion was born.
Kampions music is a mixture of old and new influences, with light contemporary pop songs like ‘WE DON’T KNOW’, contrasted with the timeless ‘HOPE IS A BIRD’. Kampions debut album ‘ALL THE USUAL CLICHES’ is shaping up to be a classic. They are shunning the over produced sound of much of today’s mainstream music and relying on strong songs rather than clever studio gimmicks to keep their music simple and honest.
Oscar Wilde once stated that “I always like to know everything about my new friends, and nothing about my old ones”. Of course there is a waspish humour within such a remark but it also focuses upon one of life’s great delights: New stuff. New stuff.
