Kara Clark never sang, played an instrument, or wrote a note until now...
Born and raised in West Virginia, she grew up, the daughter of a state trooper and grand daughter
of the local sheriff with many dreams that didn't involve music.
Kara established a career as a paramedic and worked hard in the local EMS and aeromedical services.
She stayed busy being a flight medic but did not know her path would drastically change.
It was after singing for some friends and family that everyone in her life realized she had a talent
that no one, including herself, knew she had.
She bought a used guitar, taught herself how to play and began writing songs.
With the advice from a friend, Gail Chasin, a career musician, she packed and moved to Nashville.
She borrowed the money to meet with renowned vocal coach Renee Grant-Williams.
Kara laughs now and says "I had a home made cd of 3 tracks, I was covering Martina McBride and
Faith Hill, I had never been on a stage, never had a band, but I bent the truth just a little."
To her surprise, Renee told her "you will stand out, you have something that people want to
be taught...emotion, style, and character...that cannot be taught".
Kara says "I will never forget her words, ever".
In no time, Kara had a band behind her, including grammy nominated guitarist Bobby Messano who
thought she was worth his time and effort and ended up becoming a dear friend.
After playing just about every club in and out of town, including, Tootsie's,
The Stage, The Second Fiddle, Broken Spoke, Fiddle and Steel, just to name a few,
she realized singing wasn't all she had to offer.
Kara then put her energy into her writing and quit being just a singer and became an artist.
She recorded her first EP which included the somewhat controversial "Sinnin". She says, "It's funny to me,
I wrote that song in twenty minutes, it's open ended and it's just about finding the strength to leave a situation that is
hurtful, nothing more". While in the studio, session player Kevin Wicker was blown away by Kara's rock attitude but traditional
country lyrics. While recording "Murder or Suicide", Kara learned her biological grandfather was a musician and played with
Hank Sr. and it all made sense. "That is where all this came from, I guess" she says.
She began playing different venues, including Exit In, 12th and Porter,
3rd and Lindsley, and Fuel, amongst others. She then began getting noticed as a strong writer as well as a powerful singer.
With over 100 songs penned, she has written everything from rock to bluegrass.
"I am influenced by several genres and I don't sit down to write any specific one, I just write what I am
feeling but I am a country girl at heart. I listen to everything from Ray Lamontagne to Mellencamp to Journey to
Live...Edwin McCain...Patty Loveless...Hank3 to Tool, I just like good music", Kara says.
Currently she is working on a new acoustic ep.
"I won't give up, it's in my blood...literally".
