Kara Kane has sung for audiences in the US and abroad as the Countess, Donna Anna, Orlofsky and Cousin Hebe, and in oratorio excerpts from Schütz’s St. Matthew’s Passion, Händel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Vesperae solennes. Kara graduated from Rice University where she won awards to study song literature in Ireland and Salzburg. Since then she has been a young artist at the Aspen Music Festival, Operafestival di Roma and Aldeburgh Music as part of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme. Other festivals include SongFest where Kara performed a preview of “Encounter” (Milosz songs) for composer John Harbison prior to its premier with the New York Philharmonic with Dawn Upshaw.
Kara has taught as a voice instructor at the University of Notre Dame, serves as artistic director for the Illinois Hunger Coalition’s annual benefit Operafest, and has been an artist-in-residence with Aldeburgh Music/Streetwise Opera. Kara has been a teaching artist in Chicago where she hosted Music Mondays at Casa de Providencia, an after school program for teens and pre-teens in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
In summer of 2007 she took the position as Chicago Opera Theater's Director of Education and Outreach. Here Kara works to develop and execute programs that infuse opera into the everyday and create opportunities for audiences of all ages to be both spectators and participants in opera. In celebration of John Adams' presentation of his newest opera at COT, A Flowering Tree, she curated a citywide festival India Blooms in Chicago. This month-long festival explored the art of storytelling across genres – film, dance, folk tale traditions, psychoanalysis, poetry, music and hip hop – to provide a lens into the rich and vibrant culture of India.
