Karama Connection was established to serve the poor, mostly those affected or infected by the AIDS virus. Our goal is to provide nutrition, medication and staff support to programs with whom we have established a long term partnership.
We are a non profit currently working umbrelled under the Child Wellness Fund in Cincinnati, Ohio. Established in May, 2005, our organization is passionate about helping those affected by the AIDS crisis in Africa. Our focus is to work on projects with children who are left vulnerable due to the AIDS pandemic. Most of work focuses on children living HIV positive.
Currently we are partnering with St. Lucia Nursing Home and Orphanage and it's Director Winfrida Mwashala. St. Lucia is an orphanage which only takes children that are HIV positive. We are committed to long term relationships which help to establish trust, allowing both programs to succeed.
Karama Connection is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. We are an all volunteer program dedicated to the success of this program.
Karama Connection began after Executive Director, Connie Naber, returned from a volunteer trip to Arusha, Tanzania in January, 2005. Having seen the suffering of people due to the AIDS pandemic she decided to start a non profit to help those in need. During that trip Connie met Winfrida Mwashala, a Tanzanian nurse, who had just started St. Lucia Hospice. At that time St. Lucia was taking in adult patients dying of AIDS, sometimes leaving a child behind also HIV positive. Due to the stigma in the community no one wanted to care for these children. Winfrida could not let these children be alone, St. Lucia was becoming an orphanage for orphaned children living HIV positive or AIDS.
Executive Director, Connie Naber, and volunteers, travel twice a year to Tanzania spending almost 2 months of the year with their partner program, St. Lucia Nursing Home and Orphanage.

Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is also one of the countries where AIDS has had a profound effect. Currently the AIDS rate is about 8% in Tanzania, but higher in Arusha where St. Lucia serves.
Tanzania has an issue with the lack of medical care and lack of medication. In order to receive free anti-retro virals a patient must be in full blown AIDS. So if they test positive for the HIV virus medication is not available until their CD4 count is 200 or below, which is how the World Health Organization’s determines the level where the virus changes from the HIV virus to AIDS virus.
Karama has been taking volunteers to Tanzania since January 2006. With these short term trips we are able to continue to have an ongoing relationships with programs we support. Volunteers have participated in numerous activities including teaching in the school, building, eye exams, nursing care and just hugs and a smile. Our volunteer program provides a small, intimate relationship allowing volunteers to be flexible. While we go with the purpose of helping most volunteers find this to be a life changing experience. We feel it is a mutual learning experience.
