"The correct understanding of Karate and its proper use is Karate-do. One who truly trains in this do [way] and actually understands Karate-do is never easily drawn into a fight...To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the highest skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill." -- Gichin Funakoshi; founder of Shotokan Karate.
"The Martial Way begins and ends with courtesy. Therefore, be properly and genuinely courteous at all times."
-- Mas Oyama; student of Funakoshi and founder of Kyokushinkai Karate.
"The more you sweat in class, the less you bleed in the street" -- anon.
"...as many soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq can attest, hand-to-hand combat is a fact of life in this war...hand-to-hand fighting, in which a soldier must close with the enemy, is still one of the most fundamental aspects of warfare and has become a regular occurrence in Iraq and Afghanistan, even in the most unexpected places."
-- Matt Larsen; U.S. Army Combatives School, Ft. Benning, GA.
