About Karen Bates

I grew up in Birkenhead, Merseyside (Liverpool's poor cousin!) moved to London when I was 17 and have been here ever since. I LOVE London; it's become ridiculously expensive and congested but the place buzzes like nowhere else I know...Soho on a Friday night...Notting Hill on Saturdays....Spitalfields market on a Sunday... Music has given me more joy than anything else in my life and owes me nothing. It's a constant, and to quote Rickie Lee Jones: "Singing gives me worth among strangers." When I walk into a room full of people that I don't know and feel intimidated or nervous, I remember that quote and it makes me glow and gives me confidence. I've been privileged to work with some wonderful musicians...Mo Foster...Chris Marshall...Andrew Ingram...Frank Ricotta...Mark Lockheart...Chris Rodel....Debbie Cassell....Martin Ansell...Paul Castle...I thank them all for the honour of playing with them and the inspiration and encouragement they gave me.
