Oooh now then... this could go on for some time but for starters I'd have to say Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Madelaine Peyroux, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Chet Baker, Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Dianne Reeves. These certainly influence HOW I sing generally, but there are LOADS of singers out there who'll influence me depending on my mood, the song, etc. Or just generally there are many people I love to listen to, which again is dependant on my moods, what I'm doing and where I'm going. Love 60's stuff: Beatles, Byrds, Velvet Underground, Doors, Mamas & Papas; World Fusion: Natasha Atlas, Susheela Raman, Jocelyn Pook; Folk: Fairport Convention, Altan, Dervish, Dubliners; Indie: Cardigans, Sundays, Gorky's Zygotic Mynky
I'll not go on cos my lunch is nearly ready and it smells lovely! Have you ever tried this exercise yourself with the naming your fave stuff? It's very hard to pinpoint your influences in life...
Sounds Like
I'd love to say I sound like the influences I've listed (sigh...wishful thinking)but I'll let you, Dear Listener, decide for yourself - as well as the tracks on here, there are also more tracks on the Lounge Lizards and Impressions Myspaces too.
I personally think you can't completely get a sense of what someone sounds like unless you see them live and I like to think I sound better live than on a recording, so if you live around Sheffield please come along to check my voice out! (I don't just think this about myself, BTW, but also about others I've seen live and heard on Myspace/their own websites).
PLEASE SEE MY WEBSITE FOR ALL GIGS LISTINGS www.karenlake.co.uk. I've been singing jazz professionally since February 2005. I now perform regularly in around Sheffield with my 2 bands, Lounge Lizards and Impressions. I also perform as a freelance singer with other musicians.
You can find out more about the bands at Myspace.com/loungelizardsjazz and Myspace.com/impressionsjazz. There's also gig listings and sample tracks for you to listen to as well as links to our websites.
There's much more to do on this (and the band's!) pages, so come back again soon to see what's what. So much to do, so little time...
