An emerging talent in the San Francisco Bay Area, Karla Avila performs in a variety of musical venues and genres. Her formal musical training includes a M.M. in Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (2003) and a B.M. from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas (2000) where she studied clarinet, saxophone, voice, and piano.
The scope of her musical talent encompasses being a professional clarinet/saxophonist, both classical and non-classical, and a multitude of collaborative projects on vocals and/or woodwinds in styles of music ranging from progressive rock to fusion to hip hop. Her extensive classical training, both instrumental and vocal, coupled with her passion for the progressive melding of musical genres has allowed her to explore many avenues of music performance and creation.
Karla Avila performs with various orchestras and contemporary music ensembles in the Bay Area including the Monterey, Marin, Fresno and Santa Cruz Symphony Orchestras, San Francisco Repertory Orchestra, Berkeley Contemporary Music Players and Ensemble Parallèle. In 2005 Ms. Avila recorded the soundtrack by David Conte and Todd Boekelheide to the Zeitgeist film Ballet Russes at George Lucas Skywalker Ranch, which showed at both the Sundance and Toronto film festivals and opened in theaters nationwide to critical acclaim. She also recently recorded the filmscore to Orozco: Man of Fire, a documentary to be aired on PBS in 2006. She has played woodwinds and sung lead vocals in the bands Floor and Nobodys Mother and currently plays in the dynamic and progressive hip hop project Ensemble Mik Nawooj.
Karla is passionate about putting new music out there. She enjoys collaborating with composers and performing new works of all styles. MUSIC HAS NO BOUNDARIES!
