biography 2009
Karl Broadie admits he’s a complete paradox: intensely private yet at the same time willing to reveal his deepest emotions through his music.
“I’m an extremely private person, but my music comes from a deep place. It’s very important to me to be completely honest in my art — if you’re true to yourself, then you are able to connect with others,” he said.
And there’s no doubt that Karl’s music does touch others — in the most intense and moving way.
“It’s important to me, to leave space in my songs so that people can respond to it from their own personal place,” he said.
Over the past seven years, Karl Broadie has emerged as one of Australia’s most original and expressive songwriters. His delicately crafted songs about small moments and universal emotions have hit the mark, and made fans and jaded industry pundits alike sit up and really take notice.
Born in Edinburgh to a family of philosophers, artists and free thinkers - a foundation that’s opened the door to his growth and development artistically - Karl is now based in Sydney. He has just finished recording his fourth album, the exquisite Branches.
The album was produced by Patty Griffin’s producer Craig Ross, and is an achingly beautiful collection of songs about the tangled emotions of life and the myriad shades of black, white and particularly grey that we experience every day.
In late 2007 he toured Australia with Patty Griffin, leading to a trip to Austin, Texas and his meeting with Craig Ross. This brought about a profound transformation in his approach to music — resulting in Branches.
“Craig woke me up to what I could achieve musically — by letting go of all my previous beliefs and assumptions and focusing on the music and what it was about,” Karl said.
“That’s what the title of this album is all about: growth, simplicity, clarity, letting the branches sway. The music makes the connection, and it touches everyone — both me and the listener — in a unique and organic way.”
Karl’s previous albums, Nowhere Now Here, Black Crow Callin’ and One Million Emeralds, have seen him build a strong reputation as a perceptive and talented singer/songwriter. He has performed at festivals as varied as Port Fairy, Queenscliff , Apollo Bay, Blue Mountains and the Edinburgh and Tartan Heart Festivals in Scotland.
