BLUE CROSS (CAN) INTERVIEW

HI JO ! FIRST OF ALL THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING ME INTO BLUE CROSS! TELL A SHORT BIO (WITH DISCOGRAPHY) OF THE BAND!....

Jo: Its kind of strange how we started and how we function. We're like a fake band. We do this in our spare time which is spare indeed. Blue Cross is very exclusive as we are but two members! There's Jess who sings and write some of the lyrics, and then there's me ,your faithful narrator, who plays the instruments. Clearly ,we don't rehearse or play gigs. I make up the music on the spot and Jess come in for a recording session. so far its: ....

(2010) 3 song demo cassette (capitalicide tapes)
(2011) Mass Hysteria LP (shogun records)....

(2012) I Am Death LP (noxious noise records), tape ( pain frites records + bruised tongue records)....

....

-AM I RIGHT IF I SAY YOUR MUSIC REMINDS ME A LOT SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES?? ..IF YES, ANY OTHER FONT OF INSPIRATION ?....

Jo: One could easily come to that conclusion due to the female vocals and the dark atmosphere. Siouxsie' s an influence as we're both fans along with a lot of the other bands that are usually associated. The big names like The Cure, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy , The Cult or Killing Joke are long time favorites. Especially during the demo time I really had bands like 13th Chime, 1919 , Sex Gang Children, Part 1, Christian Death and UK Decay in mind. On the LP's i wanted to do a middle ground between Iron Maiden, Angel Witch, Holocaust with bands like Cure, Clan of Xymox ,Bauhaus. The spooky ultra- chorus laden guitar sounds of The Cure, Christian Death or Paul Chain Violet Theater are the basis of every song.....

....

-NO REDEEMER,I HATE THIS FUCKINGWORLD,HERE WITH A BULLET & I AM DEATH ARE VERY "HAPPY" TITLES…..HOW DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR A LYRIC AND HOW DO YOU WRITE THEM (ALONE IN A DARK ROOM WITH CANDLES OR JUST DRUNK AFTER A PUKE SESSION IN TOILET)??....

....

Jo: Well ironically 'No Redeemer" is certainly not written while 'just drunk after a puke session in toilet" ,because one could almost label it as a straight-edge anthem. It confronts all of those who have drinking of drugs problems and always seem to come to me on a one-on-one basis to confess that they wish they were sober and not dependent like i am. Its about how all i seem to find in these people is disappointment because none of them seem to act on their problems. I despise being approached like I'm some kind of puritanical sober-messiah. I've been pushed to the point where i really don't care about others drinking or drugs problems. The song says "I'm no redeemer'.
"I hate this fucking world" conveys my resentment and anger towards the ideal of permanency. It's about spending all your life and energy dedicated to one person and living in total self sacrifice ,only to be fucked over in the end. I can't help to feel this misanthropic or pessimistic. Its ruined once was a good person and made me a very calloused and hateful individual .
"here with a bullet" was written by Jess and has the re-occurring theme of revenge towards those who've mistreated you in the past. Its about fantasizing retribution and justice. Many of our lyrics have the theme of being put up against the wall and feeling totally helpless towards unjustice..Perhaps playing cold dark music is essentially a vessel to express this and sometimes the only thing you can do about life.
"I Am Death" is somewhat of a vague song ,but to me it evokes feelings of living in fear and having to always be cautious in everyday life to the point of being dehumanized or almost turned into an automaton of sorts. ....

-I CAN SEE THE EYE OF HORUS ON YOUR "I AM DEATH" ALBUM COVER AND YOU ALSO HAVE A TATTOO OF THIS EGYPTIAN SYMBOL...WHY? HAS IT SOMETHING TO DO WITH A.CROWLEY'S AEON OF HORUS??....

Jo: While Crowley is very interesting, I think its to be taken with a grain of salt and as mere entertainment. the reason i have these tattoos is purely because of general fascination with ancient Egypt. Blue Cross is a very intuitive band and usually follows immediate impulse or instinct ,so perhaps I drew the album cover with the Eye of Horus (" the Eye of Ra"), and the Ankh Cross to make this record very personal; to say "hey this is my record".....

....

-YOU ARE PLAYING BASS WITH HEAVY/DOOM BAND CAUCHEMAR..HOW DID YOU END IN THE LINE UP?? ARE YOU STILL IN OR IT WAS JUST FOR THE TOUR?....

Jo: I ended up in Cauchemar as i am old friends with the people in the band so I was asked to join for a tour because of lots of previous tour experience. As of now im still in the band. Its strange playing in someone else's band, but I feel in good hands for the most part as Annick the singer is usually on top of her shit. A new record is in the works but Cauchemar works the opposite way as Blue Cross: Very slow!....

....

-YOU LOOK LIKE SID VICIOUS"JR. " (BUT YOU PLAY BASS VERY WELL)..HOW WAS TOURING WITH SO MANY METAL/DOOM BANDS AND WHICH GIG/FESTIVAL WILL BE IMPRESSED IN YOUR MEMORY....AND ENGRAVED ON YOUR TOMBSTONE…?....

Jo: I dunno about being Sid Vicious JR as he was 21 years old when he died,so that would make me "Sid Vicious Sr." because im much older hahaa. Well aside with playing with childhood favorites like Grim Reaper, Manilla Road, Hell, Anvil, Whiplash ,Ostrogoth, Oz, Witch Cross, and especially Raven, the bands that were the best were Screamer, Slough Feg, Volture, Portrait , High Spirits ,War Hammer , Black Oath and especially Enforcer was great. I find that since Cauchemar was labeled as a Doom-Metal band we played many gigs with Stoner-Rock bands that i really don't like whatsoever.....

....

-DO YOU FIND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PUNK/DARK & METAL ATTITUDE OR IT S ALL THE SAME SHIT??....

Jo: I find that in Europe punk rock and heavy metal scenes don't really cross over and that in some metal scenes the neo nazi black metal types aren't totally ostracized as they should. I was disappointed to see them accepted in the metal scene at times. I think musically both styles are so similar and throughout each's evolutions they've borrowed from each other.....

....

-THAT'S ALL FOR NOW..HOPE BLUE CROSS WILL START MAKING LIVE CEREMONIES ONE DAY..IF YES, LET ME KNOW!.... RELEASE YOUR LAST BREATH......

Jo: Find us a record deal and we'll release another record perhaps.....
