KARMA LOGIC:
Karma Logic founders Bennet and John will be the first to tell you that the band’s music is unconventional. In 2007 with only a computer, keyboard, guitar, and a voice for freedom, Karma Logic was born as an electronic industrial band with a strong social and political message for the masses. Guitarist Bennet hails from the San Francisco bay area where his band Wasted Morality from the 80’s and 90’s achieved much success locally, on the college radio throughout North America, and in the European metal scene. Throughout their career Wasted Morality attacked the bay area music scene with an onslaught of cross-over punk-metal, playing shows with the likes of Suicidal Tendencies, Primus, Green Day, DRI, Death Angel, and Dead Kennedys. The band released two independent EPs, which together sold over 10,000 copies. Lead vocalist John is an accomplished guitarist, keyboardist, and lyricist who has played in several bands throughout Colorado over the past two decades. In addition to his jazz influences and songwriting sensibilities, John has a strong punk rock background from his days playing bass with Western Decadence, a punk rock band from the 80’s. With these diverse influences, Karma Logic was destined to be a creative and original endeavor.
Shortly after the band began writing material, they discovered the need for a drummer and bass player. Dave was introduced to the band through a friend, and his fluid and powerful drumming was a perfect fit for the band’s stylistic direction. Soon after bassist/ vocalist Steve --another good friend and great musician who played with John in the rock band Slow Children Playing -- joined the band. Over the next several months the band’s experimental sound began to evolve into a unique style. Karma Logic was now complete, ready to share its hard-edged music and the message to wake-up to the social and political realities going on around us, to stand up for freedom, liberty and self-awareness.
“Where did the band name come from” you ask. One day while hanging out in the parking lot at a local ski resort, John and a friend of his offered some barbeque to a group of people they didn’t even know while a member of this group of people simultaneously offered them some beer. John said out loud “now that’s Karma Logic.” John and Bennet had been throwing a lot of band name ideas around but nothing had stuck. John mentioned the name “Karma Logic” and they both thought it was great for the musical style and lyrical message they wanted to portray.
Beginning in 2008, the band decided to record a demo and begin to bring their music to audiences starved for a fresh, new sound. Bennet and John agreed, “It isn’t music unless there’s someone else listening to it and enjoying what he or she hears.” The initial goal was to put out a few songs to land some gigs, but the demo they began recording in their basement studio soon turned into a full-length album to be released independently in the near future. The diverse musical feel of their style entails shredding metal guitar; haunting melodies; driving, danceable beats; thunderous bass; melodic keys; sample loops; and heartfelt lyrics with a message of stark reality, yet hope for the future we create. Karma Logic’s sound is much more than just music; as guitarist Bennet puts it “music is more than entertainment,, it’s an expression of rebellion against the oppressor and a way to influence the minds of future generations.”
The band is ready to bring their rich tapestry of hard edge music to a local venue near you, so wake up and don’t miss the experience. Also, look for their first independent release this summer.
