Built to Spill | | Sounds Like | "It starts off relatively indie, then realising they're bored with this, twists into something far more interesting, leaning on the instrumental, with at times relatively sparse lyrics, shimmering, arty, delicate and fragile while still having strength, more rapier than broadsword. It turns out to be a quite short set, or it might just be I was enjoying it too much"

| About Kartta |
Kartta is a band. We like melodic and rhythmic noise. To achieve this we have been known to use: drums; bass; guitars; glockenspiel; tambourine; jingle bells; delay, distortion, and reverb pedals (sometimes all at once); melodica (that’s a miniature mouth organ, don’t ya know); miniature accordian; handclaps; and a beautifully beautiful korg keyboard.
"Stabbing guitar melodies, swishing lead guitar lines. I'm mentally jumping around and it's only a matter of time before the cerebral becomes the visceral bodily kick that puts me in motion. Slick lush bass lines, kicking drums and that's my cue, I'm out of the chair like I've just scored a last minute cup final goal. This is arms flailing, smiles aloft, high voltage amplified fucking happiness. My faith in Indie Pop has been restored, resovled and reignited. This is the sound of Kartta…
"Henri Got Cancer" is the lovable jittery angsty son of Boyracer. Thrashing hooks, fey vocal lines and skeletal molten riffs. Joyously distorted guitars explode and writhe in ecstasy, bringing in the MASSIVE chorus. Influenced by Henry Miller's "Tropic Of Cancer," this song is the musical equivalent of the novel's youthful sexual energy and exuberance but is also tinged with enough clandestine melancholy to make you feel satisfied but slightly unclean. 10/10
"Left Avenue" jangles like McCarthy and has that raw home recorded feel of early Hood. More doses of melancholic uplifting indie pop. For music to reminisce by, see "Oh puzzled heart, where have you left me?" 7/10
"The Year aside" is a stripped down, laid bare, open hearted musical confession. The track is the sound of a person falling apart losing cohesion and a sense of self. Suddenly, it all gains clarity and the track comes together, making a stand and fighting back, whilst juggling the pieces and making sense of it all once again. 8/10
Kartta have supported the likes of The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit. Despite supporting higher profile acts, Phillip explained to me that due to the bands location (Aberdeen) and the members living far apart, "We will never get signed." This saddens me, as anyone who listens to this band and compares them with the mundane and stagnant post Libertines drawl can only make one huge angry assumption; this band should fucking HUGE!!!"
