Influences
Sounds Like
Guitar based indy rock, with a slight soul influence coming from Dan and topped off with the mental drumming of Emily. And not forgeting of course the driving bass grooves from owen
K.A Smiley first formed in November 2006 as a acoustic duo consisting of Dan and Dave. In january 2007 we decided it was time to have a change, and get a full band going. This resulted in us being joined by the ever incredible Emily Ward on drums.
We tried out a few bass players until finally settling with Owen in July. On the run up to find owen we had been involved with the "Monkey Journey to The West" Opera project created by Damon Albarn, for this project we wrote and recorded GO. During this time we were mentored by Martin Walsh from the Inspiral Carpets.
After finally getting a bass player that suited us we began writing and developing our style.
Soon after this we were spotted by one of the organisers of the Dpercussion festival, who then booked us for the main stage.
Since Dpercussion we have done a few acoustic sessions in the Chorlton area, which included winning the first round of the EXR acoustic battle of the bands.
We were then invited to play a live session on Art FM which was broadcast live on the radio and online. This session was recorded and those tracks are what we have up on the myspace at the moment.
During the session we decided to try to write a song on the spot and this resulted in Are You Worth it.
We will be hopefully playing again soon. If you want to book us just message us.
EVERYBODY GET YOUR ARSES DOWN TO THIS GIG (!!!) Hi there – please also see the 2 comments below for other opportunities!!!!
We are looking for bands/acoustic acts to fill our Thursday night slots at the carlton club in whalley range. All gigs are paid – we charge £3 on the door and the takings are shared equally between each band member and the two organizers. Our last night paid 5 people (2 organisers + 3 piece band) £35 each. There were 60 people there. The club capacity is 120 which we have filled in the past so payment depends on how many people we all bring along! If you are interested in a slot please email Mike on info@exr.org.uk
We are also looking for participants in the following (we still need a number of acts) …
Our 2nd Acoustic competition (EXR Acoustic Award) begins this week (Wednesday 1st August – and every Wednesday after that) at REVISE bar, Chorlton and runs for 23 weeks – we say ‘acoustic’ but any instrument except a drum kit is allowed. There will be 64 acts in 16 heats (4 per heat) over a six month period. All acts getting through their heat and into the quarter finals will receive a decent prize. You play for half an hour and there is an audience vote at the end of the night. So bringing your support is useful BUT not crucial as the most important thing is the floating audience and bar staff as we found earlier this year. Top prize in the 1st competition was a day in Airtight recording studio and £250 and was won by ‘Coraline’– not bad for an hour and a half’s work. We are presently putting the prizes together for this competition. One will be the free recording of an album at our recording studio. Wee will also produce a compilation album of the last 16 which will be promoted through our organization and from which you will get recognition and some cash. The stage will be professionally dressed and photography will be by well known Manchester music photographer Andy (‘dArbyshire’) Darbyshire (www.myspace.com/acousticattitude). There will also be DVDs of your performance available cheaply for use on MySpace, YouTube etc.

Our 1st Electric competition (EXR Electric Award) begins at Czech Bar, Hulme (nr Royal Northern College of Music) on Friday 5th October. There will be a launch with a couple of well known Manchester bands on 28th September. Again it’s a 64-band competition with prizes from quarter finals upwards. This is a 360 capacity venue so you will have a great crowd. Our top prize so far is a weekend in Prague for the band. All of the info relating to the Acoustic Award also applies here.
One other point – every band/act involved in the competition gets a free page on the EXR site (www.exr.ORG.uk) where you can add your mp3s, pics, blurb and MySpace address
So, please contact us ASAP to secure a place as this will be a very popular event.
