About me: Everyone in Bristol, Rhode Island knows me as good-hearted Kate, a long lost relative trying to make a new start by opening a ‘mom & pops’ style coffee shop in this franchise free small town. I have quilted myself into the fabric of this esoteric community by befriending the locals with homespun stories of a fictitious past, but a ‘dark’ secret brews in my house of ‘carbs.’
Would the town approve if they knew my true identity as the front-woman for Organic Hearth, a coffee and baked goods conglomerate taking root in their back yard? But, now I've started to fall in love with this quaint little town and Sam, the local deputy!
I'm starting to question everything I've ever done. I wonder what life in Bristol would be like if I made all of my lies come true.
..
Who I'd like to meet: I've met so many people already: Lila, the crazy chicken coop lady; Evelyn Brigmore, the horny town matriarc and head of the Historical Society; Denise, who works at full capacity tying her shoes and has an uncontrolable craving for sweets; Jebadiah Brown, My landlord and surrogate father figure; Ira Gillenfeld, my assigned love interest who I can't stand; The Colonial Dame, the uninformed town lesbian in period costume; my nemesis, Jimmy, the 16 year-old parking Nazi, and his virginal girlfriend Janice; and finally the hottest man in a deputy uniform, Sam Davies.
Now that I've met Sam, everything's turned upside down. I've changed my plans and made excuses to stay longer than I ever intended. This isn't how it normally happens. I usually move into a small town, set up my coffee shop, befriend the town folk, then when a loyal following has been established I make an excuse to leave and then do it all somewhere else. All for Organic Hearth and the locals have no idea a franchise has taken root right under there nose and in their historic districts.
Congratulations on Kate & Co. winning the Rhode Island International Film Festival screenplay award. I was fortunate enough to have been invited to the festival as a guest panelist by the RIIFF in each of their last two festivals (2006 & 2007).
