   About Kate Binningsley

Kate has been compared to Rickie Lee Jones, Natalie Merchant, and Joni Mitchell, and has been heavily influenced by the song writing of Tom Waits & Bob Dylan. In July 2007 she recorded her debut solo EP with Nigel Stonier at the Loft Studios (Liverpool), feauturing tracks 'Awen's Song', The Lament of the Sailor's Wife', 'Fire', Joni's Emancipation' and 'Beautiful Day'.

Kate has enjoyed exposure and regular airplay on BBC Radio Wales from DJ's Alan Thompson and Amy Wadge, and has spent the last 12 months gigging across wales and creating a local buzz performing with folk duo, Bluebird and Ember. Kate’s music has also received support from singer/ songwriters Amy Wadge, Sandi Thom & Thea Gilmore, and has enjoyed great reviews from Folk and Roots magazine, MU magazine and Acoustic magazine.

This summer Kate has performed across Wales on the festival scene, at Sesiwn Fawr, The Square Festival, Mid Mad in Aberystwth, Hwyl Haf at Devil's Bridge and more recently at the Word's and Music Festival.

In October 2008 Kate supported Eliza Carthy and the Waterson/Carthy band at the Words and Music Festival in Cheshire. Kate is currently taking time out from gigging to finish writing her first full length album which she plans to record live, as a public performance at the end of the year.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING...

..."possesses a musical maturity beyond her years. An artist with an extremely bright future." Musician magazine- Journal of the MU

"Kate's alternative folk songs demonstrate powerful vocals and impressive guitar rhythms" Aberystwyth Acoustic Platform

"Awen.Song...is a fantastic introduction to a singer/songwriter of fantastic promise; I await her next recording with high expectation" Harry Rogers, Wild West Wales Creative Agency

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(see my blog for details):
CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

A...

TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

(Hi: enjoyed my visit.)

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

hey kate =]

its been a while since i last sent you a message, but it was my mum calling your house that gave me a bit of a kick up the bum. lol. she did call to speak to your mum, but kirsty answered. anyway, we got talking about you and your baby, and kirsty said that she had put photos on her facebook, but i've searched for her, and it didnt show her (i've added you though). So, if you could ask her to add me or something.

Well yes, i did mean to see how you were after you'd had your baby, but it slipt my mind, and when i asked my mum, she said you had it about 6 months ago! so sorry its a bit late, but

CONGRATULATIONS!

I just read over our last message, and I was talking about being worried over my GCSE's! well, i have those now, i got 5 A's, 7 B's and 2 C's
So i decided to go and do my A levels, which i am doing now.. i should be doing homework, but that can wait. haha.
Gosh, i could probably keep writing for hours, but your probably busy getting Branwen fed and put to bed and stuff.

I'm still liking your music by the way, keep it up (=

anyhow, chat soon
love to u & branwen
