Born October 8th, 1986, Katelyn Mallone grew up in and around Eugene, Oregon. Upon graduating from Marist High School, she transitioned to move north to Seattle, Washington. There she is currently enrolled at Cornish College of the Arts where she will be graduating in 2008. While at Cornish College of the Arts, Katelyn is majoring in instrumental jazz piano and is minoring in composition. She has dreams of graduating with a Bachelor's degree in music and plans on furthering her music education, ultimately achieving her teaching degree and teaching music to elementary school children.
"If I can inspire one child to love and appreciate music...then I've done my job." -Katelyn Mallone
Katelyn has played with numerous bands including "The G-String Band", "Mallone's Element", "Effected Element", "The Forget Me Nots", "Hot Laundry" and most recently "The X-Ray Eyes." Currently she is playing in her own band; Katelyn Mallone & AfterMoon, which is centered around her original compositions. For more info, please read our full bio on the blog section of this website.
Although jazz is her main focus in the academic setting, singer-songwriting is her passion and career choice, which is the path she is taking musically. Katelyn's been writing original works since the age of 12, and it's evident that this is where her passion lies. Beginning on the piano at age 5 with lessons, and later picking up the guitar, her compositions have grown and matured as well, as she has become a solid musician in her own right. In the fall of 2006, one of Mallone's instrumental compositions was performed by the Saint Helens String Quartet in PONCHO concert hall.
Katelyn certainly has been engulfed in her music career and has played in such venues as the Hult Center, (Eugene, OR) the Cuthbert Amphitheater (Eugene, OR) and Benaroya Hall (Seattle, WA). She has taken individual instruction with such notable musicians as Dawn Clement and
Linda Waterfall. Katelyn has also been taught by such musicians as
Jovino Santos Neto,
Jim Knapp, Chuck Deardorf, Julian Priester and Johnny Conga. She also had the honor of opening up for
Poncho Sanchez, as well as playing under the band director
Steve Owen from the jazz department at University of Oregon. Katelyn has also played under the band director James Phillips (the tenor saxophonist best known for his work with the Cherry Poppin' Daddies) as well as working with the amazing jazz pianist
Dick Hyman while at Oregon Festival of American Music (OFAM).
In the summer of 2007, Katelyn went on a tour throughout the Pacific Northwest, playing keyboard and back-up vocals for the Forget Me Nots band. Katelyn just finished recording her original music and laying down tracks for her demo entitled "The Roy Sessions" back in the fall of 2007. Some of the demo tracks are currently available to hear on Myspace. Katelyn is currently playing with her band, Katelyn Mallone & After Moon and is gearing up to perform her Junior Recital in the fall at PONCHO Concert Hall. Check back for more info.
On October 7th, 2008, Katelyn was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called Cervical Dystonia and has been undergoing medical treatments. During this time Katelyn has had to put her music career on the back burner to focus on recovery. Katelyn Mallone thanks you all for the prayers and well wishes. Katelyn will overcome this obstacle and can't wait to get back in gear and focus on her music.
