Kate Messner, Author
I write books for kids and other people who love reading. My first middle grade historical novel, SPITFIRE (North Country Books, 2007), won the Adirondack Literary Award for Children's Literature. My new book, CHAMPLAIN AND THE SILENT ONE (North Country Books, 2008), tells the story of an Innu boy who accompanies Samuel de Champlain on his voyage from Quebec to what is now Lake Champlain.
My future releases include a picture book called OVER AND UNDER THE SNOW with Chronicle Books, the MARTY MCGUIRE chapter book series which will debut with Scholastic in 2010, and THE BRILLIANT FALL OF GIANNA Z, a middle grade novel set in Vermont, coming from Walker Books in September 2009.

I'm a children's writer, teacher, mother, wife, runner, hiker, traveler, reader, dreamer of dreams, gobbler of chocolate, and swinger of birches.
I live on Lake Champlain, where I teach 7th grade English to lively, interesting kids and write books for lively, interesting kids everywhere. My first book, SPITFIRE, is about a young girl who disguises herself as a boy to fight in a Revolutionary War naval battle on Lake Champlain.
In 2006, I earned National Board Certification in Early Adolescent English Language Arts, and I often give presentations and workshops for teachers, librarians, and kids.
When I'm not teaching or writing, I love spending time on the lake and in the Adirondacks and Green Mountains. I'm especially good at skipping rocks and eating s'mores. Thanks for stopping by my MySpace home!
