Philippe Katerine est né le 8 décembre 1968 et est originaire de Chantonnay en Vendée, près de Nantes. A l'adolescence, il a monté des groupes sous influences anglo-saxonnes avec des amis, ne prenant jamais ça vraiment au sérieux. Un jour, il a acheté un magnétophone quatre pistes et ce fût pour lui une sorte de déclic. Parallèlement à sa vie professionnelle, il a commencé de composer ses chansons dans sa chambre, jusqu'au jour où ses proches l'ont poussé à aller plus loin. Katerine, est devenu projectionniste de cinéma rural itinérant, présentateur du journal à la radio locale de Chantonnay, employé à l'abattoir de Saint-Fulgent, chez Citroën et même professeur de gymnastique dans un lycée agricole. En effet, il était très sportif et dans sa jeunesse, il est allé très haut dans les compétitions de basket-ball. Son équipe était très soudée et Katerine avoue aujourd'hui regretter la complicité qu'il entretenait avec ses coéquipiers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Along with perfomers like Dominique A. and Valerie LeMercier, singer/songwriter Philippe Katerine was among the leaders of the 'minimalist variete' movement in French pop during the mid-1990s. Drawing on influences as diverse as Burt Bacharach and Michel Legrand to the Clash and the Buzzcocks, Katerine signed to the Rosebud label and debuted with the album Les Mariages Chinois; for the follow-up, L'Education Anglaise, he moved out from behind the microphone, allowing his sister Bruno and girlfriend Anne to share vocal duties. A set of four EPs followed, on which Katerine returned to the forefront of his music; the EPs were later collected under the title Mes Mauvaises Frequentations.
