Sounds Like
Nothing you've heard and lots of things you've heard; the musical brainchild of Tori Amos and Paul Simon; Norah Jones on too much caffeine, Aristotle, and e.e. cummings; the lost sister of Regina Spektor and Nicole Atkins; John Mellencamp, John Mayer, and George Winston as piano-playing, singer-songwriting girlies; murkily familiar yet unidentifiable psychedelic, folksy-yet-sophisticated alternative pop-rock.
Greetings, and welcome to the Official Kate Van Horn Myspace page!
Kate Van Horn Group have recently been featured on KRSH (www.krsh.com, Sonoma County 95.9 FM) for the Thursday Night Live local artist spotlight, and the band played their best yet in spite of numerous challenges! Thanks to KRSH, our host, Andre de Channes, and Bill Bowker for having the group on their station!
The group also recently performed as 1 of 6 finalists from over 2,000 entries for Discmakers' 2008 Independent Music World Series (West Region). Selected by representatives from TAXI and the editors of Billboard Magazine, they shared the Knitting Factory, Hollywood stage with superbly talented indie acts the Shook Twins, Shotgun Radio, Kid Theodore, FM Revolver, and Hey Mister. It was a smashing success!
Introducing Kate Van Horn, singer, songsmith, and pianist. Kate, raised on the East Coast and settled in the California wine country, is the daughter of a choir director and and an accomplished architect and wood sculptor and is one of seven offspring. Kate was always singing as a child and she began playing piano as soon as she could reach the keys. After experimenting with several string and wood instruments and performing in musical and stage roles, she found her true passion was crafting songs at her piano. Kate has been effervescing with captivating tunes and clever lyrics since the tender age of 12. Over the years she has mastered the art of surrendering her songs with her sweetly sophisticated soprano.
Today, she is enchanting audiences in Northern California and beyond with her band: Vic Carberry – drummer, Jeff Martin – bassist, and Roxanne Oliva – accordionist/multi-instrumentalist. Drummer Vic Carberry has played and recorded with Tommy Tutone, Pinocchio Vampire, Sarah Baker – to name a few. He currently performs with several bands and is often described as an “orchestral” drummer with a secret urge to rock heavily.
Bassist Jeff Martin is a seasoned and educated studio and performing musician as well as a skilled sound engineer. He has been a featured bass player with The Ruminators, Joanne Rand, and Stiff Dead Cat. He lends his arranging, recording, and multi-instrumentalist talents to the group. He is the owner/operator of STUDIO E recording studio in Sebastopol, California.
Multi-instrumentalist Roxanne Oliva works as a strolling accordionist and Celtic music teacher. She helped form the band The Ruminators, is an accomplished performer and has appeared on a dizzying array of recordings, including a soundtrack with Tom Waits. She spices up Kate’s music with accordion, percussion, harp, keyboards and winds.
Mooka Rennick, owner of PRAIRIE SUN RECORDING in Cotati, CA, has played a vital role in assembling these fine musicians for Kate's upcoming self-produced album "truce". The record is co-produced and with additional arrangement by Jeff Martin and engineered, mixed and mastered by Matt Wright, a highly accomplished, multi-talented, and up-and-coming staff engineer at Prairie Sun.
Stay tuned for release dates!

Hi Kate, I am feeling much better, but I still have a little cough hanging on. I will try to make April 4. It will be nice to hear you again. I hope all is going well with you. Have a great weekend.
I have been spending hours in my room, recording and producing my newer and older songs. It's a story of the after effects of a serious relationship, so please listen to the first 2 songs!
"Tell Myself" & "Passion For Love"
Both have some cool overlays with guitar and vocal harmonies. The second song especially has some interesting change-ups in the second half of the song.
Hello there Beautiful, I am a little under the weather. But I am happy, always. Thank you, and I can't wait to see you again. As well I wish you a wonderful rest of your week and a beatiful weekend to come. Have a wonderful time tomorrow night and if I start to feel better I may come by and see you. Take care my friend.
