After the recent release of her new single and video clip, ‘The Way You Are’, which is making radio waves around the country, Kate Vigo is making a name for herself in the music scene. With a sound that sits astride eclectic pop and stylized 60s rock, Kate is joined by amazing ensemble musicians known as ‘The Underground Orchestra’.
The fast rising vocalist came into the limelight as highest album selling performer of the 2008 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival. Whilst her jazz foundations have served her well, she has now changed her sound to embody an eclectic mixture of sounds, from pop rock to subtle acoustic refrains teamed with programmed loops, intricate melodies, Kate’s trademark soulful voice and 60's girl band influence.
Vigo, runner-up in the 2007 Independent Music Awards (and the only Australian nominated for the singer/songwriter category), led the late Australian music icon Clifford Hocking to remark: ‘Kate’s singing bowled me over in the same way that Kate Ceberano’s did when I first heard her …she is a remarkable talent.’
She is a talented and truly original songwriter who has been acclaimed and acknowledged as a finalist in the 2009 “New Artists to Radio” Competition.
She is about to embark on her first National Australian Tour with the new single “The Way You Are” which will be quickly followed-up in 2010 with the National Album Launch Tour.
Kate has quickly caught the eye of Festival Directors and 2009 will see her band playing at The Semaphore Music Festival (SA), Darebin Feast (VIC) and The Queensland Multicultural Festival (QLD).
Kate finished a degree in fashion design before undertaking a bachelor in voice improvisation at The VCA and, while worlds apart, parallels can be found in Kate’s music and her love of fashion. Weaving together a distinct array of sounds, from Billie Holiday to Feist, by way of Prince and Aretha Franklin, Kate’s eclectic mix of influences create a foundation on which she builds her distinctive, yet accessible, compositions.
Recording her debut album ‘It Is Love’ in 2007 with producer Myles Mumford culminated in a mixed selection, with arrangements of old favourites blended with original compositions. The album was picked up and distributed commercially by MGM, both in stores and online.
A limited edition remix EP of ‘It Is Love’ released in 2008 was the result of innovative collaborations with some of Melbourne’s best producers, including Jan Skubiszewski (Jackson Jackson) and DJ Soup (Miso).
Kate’s new Single and Video Clip ‘The Way You Are’ has received great support from radio and ABC television through RAGE.
‘The Way You Are’ is the first singlefrom Kate’s upcoming album which she is working on in collaboration with Damien Charles, also producer of ‘The Red Eyes’.
In Kate’s home city of Melbourne you can catch her and the The Underground Orchestra in premier original music venues such as The Northcote Social Club, The Toff in Town, The Empress, 303 and Manchester Lane.

Reviews @ Quotes about Kate Vigo
“A little bit jazz, a little bit torch singer, a little bit pop, and a whole lot entrancing” Herald Sun, HIT
“She sings with a maturity and timbre that belies her youth ... a truly original artist” Readings Monthly
“Kate Vigo’s vocals have a certain magnetism that draws you in.” Toxic Pete Music Review
“'The Way You Are' by Kate Vigo simply jumps out at you as soon as the intro kicks in - oh, and it don't let go either, it just keeps on gnawing away at you until you give in to it's hooky rhythmic way and then realisation kicks in that Kate Vigo is a special recording artist! 'The Way You Are' is a real 'smart' single; aimed at no particular popular marketplace but sufficiently all-encompassing to appeal to the masses rather than the few it's an extremely tasty, commercial offering from a lady with class and distinction.
Vigo's up-front sexy voice set against simplistic piano and coupled with some fantastic orchestration gives this song massive presence that should appeal to a very wide audience, young, old and in between. Vigo's voice sits somewhere within the area of refined soulful jazz and mature pop and she certainly knows how to get her beautifully vibrant 'tones' out to you! 'The Way You Are' (often known as 'The Doo Doo Song' for reasons that will become apparent) is a spankingly viable yet maturely conceived and passionately executed song. It's short and to the point but in that short time you really get the feeling that you know Kate Vigo and her wonderfully mature music.
Australian songstress Kate Vigo reaches out to you with 'The Way You Are'; her vocals have a certain magnetism that draws you in and, what's really smart is that, it all happens pretty quickly; Vigo, in just one concise but irritatingly infectious song, gets under your skin (in the nicest possible way!) and sets off an addictive reaction that's pretty scary. 'The Way You Are' is taken from Vigo's forthcoming second album which promises to be something a bit special if this song is anything to go by!
'The Way You Are' by Kate Vigo is poppy enough to be a stand-alone chart hit yet mature enough to ensure that those affected by her magical way look further into her recording repertoire - what a great tantalising teaser 'The Way You Are' is!! With its obvious leanings towards the more mature end of the market, 'The Way You Are' by Kate Vigo is laying down super-strong foundations here and once this single gets air-play I'm sure it'll have a knock-on effect such that Vigo will see an increase in album sales too. With its jazzy inflections and soulful heart 'The Way You Are' by Kate Vigo will find many takers from all walks of life - just a 'starter for ten' then, methinks - the start of something very big and very successful! Love it, love it!!” Toxic Pete Music Reviews
“The superbly talented Kate Vigo is an indie pop singer with a pristine voice is set to release a second album and the single “The Way You Are’ is a sunny entrée, full of warm R'n'B vocals, unassuming piano, finger clicks and doo doos.” Beat Magazine
“For a Melbourne girl who tours alternately with her own five-piece band, then the 12-piece Melbourne Underground Orchestra, ‘minimal-sounding’ is an unexpected hyphenated adjective to describe Kate Vigo’s music, but that’s just how The Way You Are reveals itself. Like a girl-next-door-been-rejected pop tune that’s spent hours miming to Kate Nash videos, it starts with naught but tinkling piano, pretty vocals and a flubber-bouncy doo doo doo doo making up the background. While never breaking out into a full symphonic explosion, string sections and horns do add to its barrow of instruments before the end. In the wake of Lily Allen, Britain has put out such an army of young, nice-but-mouthy-when-they-need-to-be soulful lady singers, it’s easy to imagine an unintimidated barrage of them (Allen, Nash, Adele, Duffy etc) walking arm in arm in a slow motion line a la the opening credits to Angel, ready to retribute every boy who’s ever done them wrong. Vigo’s doing a damn impressive job of picking up our local slack in this department, proving as vocally cute, vulnerable and potentially feisty as any of the above.” Rave Magazine, March 10th 2009 Single of The Week (Kate Vigo – The Way You Are)
